Dillingham handicap

by John Moorehouse
Before becoming an AQHA Champion, Little Bit Of Baja splashed onto the scene by winning the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. Not to suggest a
similar career track lies ahead for Kool Million, the victor in this year’s version of the Maiden Stakes, but Ed Allred’s homebred gelding did post an impressive triumph in his next out, the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap held May 5 at Los Alamitos.
Kool Million improved to 2-1-0 in three starts this year, and now holds three wins in four career outs. The $13,750 payday from his first official stakes win pushed his lifetime earnings to $82,465.
Jose Flores, Kool Million’s trainer, said after the race that the gelding “has a chance to be something. We’ll see what happens. We’re going to be patient with this horse.”
Kool Million showed a real sense of urgency
in this 400-yard event. He and Chicks Boudro broke from the inside starting positions and quickly separated themselves from the pack. Chicks Boudro had the lead all the way up until the final strides, when Kool Million finally overtook the leader. Cruz Mendez, the meet’s leading Quarter Horse rider, brought Kool Million across the line first by a neck.
Kool Million is the sole starter thus produced by his dam, the 2003 mare Kool As Ever.
BF Farm Girl (First Down Dash-Shirleys Strawfly), the pre-race favorite, surpassed Chicks Boudro (Chicks Beduino-Beat Your Pants Off) to claim second place for owners Donald and Peggy Boyle. Paul Jones is the trainer and Ramon Sanchez did the riding. Chicks Boudro’s connections, owner Ovidio Ferreira and trainer Dan Francisco, settled for third. Oscar Peinado was aboard.
Willie Dasher (Separatist-Im Willie Kool), FDD Moon (First Down Dash-Moon Arisen) and Hectorad (Dash To Chivato-Megarad) completed the field.

by Stacy Pigott
Five Star Cartel has risen from the ranks of $5,000 claimer to stakes winner with his win in the $22,340 Tom Tucker Memorial Stakes on May 11 at
Fairmount Park.
Ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Five Star Cartel
got off to a good start from post position six, ignor- ing the trouble of The Star Alert, next door in the five hole, who reared at the start and was never in contention after losing lengths at the break. By the first call, Five Star Cartel was in total command of the Tom Tucker with a daylight lead on the seven- horse field. At the wire, Five Star Cartel was an easy 2 3/4 lengths in front of a spread out field, where nearly nine lengths separated first from last.
Trained by Frank Randazzo Jr., Five Star Cartel eanred $13,404 for owner Blas Juarez Sr. The 5-year- old gelding has now won six of 28 starts, with three stakes-placings to his credit in futurities and derbies during the 2009-2010 seasons. With total earnings of $71,023, he is the richest earner for his dam, the unraced Mr Eye Opener mare These Eyes. Bred by C.D Kemp, Five Star Cartel is also These Eyes’ only stakes winner from three foals to race.
Delta Dance (Country Chicks Man-Olenes Gamble) finished second with Michael James in the irons. Richard and Kelly Lehn own Delta Dance, who is also conditioned by Kelly Lehn. Delta Dance was a three-time allowance winner in 2011.
The 6-year-old gelding MDT Streetfighter (Toast To Dash-Thru Rebas Eyes) finished third with Ruben Serna in the saddle for owner/trainer Randy Smith. MDT Streetfighter was a graded stakes winner in Louisiana in 2009.
Runnin Jessica (Agouti-Constant Winner), Doc Holliday 123 (Holland Ease-Docs Effi), Holland Aces (Royal Shake Em-Covering Holland), and The Star Alert (Beat The Feet-TB-Lil Gamble Star) completed the field.

by Stacy Pigott
multiple stakes-placed Legacys A Streakin started 2012 off with her first ever official stakes win in the $15,992 John Deere AQHA Classic
Stakes on May 13 at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
Trained by Laurie Ferguson, Legacys A Streakin was second in the 2010 Canada Cup Futurity-G3, third in the 2011 Evergreen Park Derby Challenge, and fourth in the 2011 Canada Cup Derby. She
won the Horsemen’s Derby in her last start of 2011, although the $9,621 purse did not qualify it as an offi- cial stakes race. Legacys A Streakin picked up an offi- cial stakes win for owner Ed Borgstrom with a solid half-length win in the John Deere AQHA Classic, which is restricted to AQHA Challenge enrolled horses as part of the Bonus Challenge program.
Ridden by Juan Garcia, Legacys A Streakin broke well and was in contention from the start. By the first call, the 4-year-old filly had taken the lead, a position she never relinquished. She crossed the wire first in a 300-yard time of :15.650, earning $8,475. She has now earned $57,897 with five wins from 13 lifetime starts.
Bred by Friesen, Janzen and Siebert in Colorado, Legacys A Streakin is the first stakes winner for her dam, Legacy Tells All. A stakes-placed daughter of Corona Cartel, Legacy Tells All has also produced multiple winners Tres A Legacy and Ucantelajess, and winner Ucantelarunaway.
Richard Settje bred, owns and trains runner-up Czech (Corona Czech-Im Special Star), who was ridden by Larris Allen. The lightly-raced 3-year-old filly won the All Canadian Futurity of Alberta last year, and has finished in the top three in all seven of her career appearances. She earned $8,475 for this runner-up effort to up her bankroll to $19,783.
Finishing third was Sepratariat (Separatist- Pocketful Of Dreams). The 7-year-old gelding did not race in 2011 and was making his first start
since Oct. 16, 2010. A winner of four of six races in 2010 including the Black Gold Classic at 770 yards, Sepratariat is trained by his owner, Laurie Ferguson, who also saddled the winner of this race. Craig Wonnacott was aboard for the John Deere.
There was a dead-heat for fourth between CR Lil Bit Of Ivory (Ivory James-A Quick Glance) and favored Memories N Moments (Leaving Memories- Butter Milk Pie). Dash Poruno (Dos Poruno-Teresas Partner) was sixth, followed by Vox (Stoli-Star
Of Sierra Leone) and Shakeyobouti (Mezoomn- Veronicas Song) to complete the field.
