Park. She raced the 400 yards in an incred- ible :19.18 to post the fastest mark over that distance ever by a four-legged creature. (The 400-yard world record has since been lowered and now stands at :18.613, a time recorded by Champion Double Down Special in the 2010 West Texas Derby-G1.)
That West Texas Derby trial proved without a shadow of a doubt that Bold Love has speed. The win in the World’s Championship Classic further showed the 4-year-old mare’s class and the $72,940 first place check boosted her career earnings to over $117,000. (She may have had a chance at an AQHA Running Championship had she not been foaled in the same year
as Denim N Diamonds, who was the 1981 Champion Aged Mare after winning six of seven starts at Bay Meadows and Los Alamitos.)
Bold Love is a product of the Spencer breeding program in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was bred by Thelma Spencer, and her dam, Lovely Moon, was also bred and is owned by Mrs. Spencer. Lovely Moon is sired by the longtime Spencer Ranch stallion Top Moon.
BOLD MOON
Bold Moon, the Thoroughbred sire of Bold Love, only has 22 starters at the time
of Bold Love’s Classic win, but he has shown himself to be a promising sire of speed mainly on the strength of Bold Love’s ability. Bold Moon is sired by the aforementioned Bold And Brave and out of the Catullus daughter Roman Feather.
Speed was the name of Bold Moon’s game at the track as he twice equaled the five furlong track standard at La Mesa Park. On each occa- sion he toured the distance in a blistering :56 1/5. Bold Moon was one of the top sprinters in the southwest with thirds in the Ruidoso Sprint Championship and the Sandia Handicap.
Bold And Brave, the sire of Bold Moon, did not start as a 2-year-old, but then earned his black type while banking over $122,000 as a 3- and 4-year-old. At 3, he won the seven furlong Hutcheson Stakes and the Jerome Handicap
at a mile. He was also second in the Florida Derby at a mile and an eighth. A son of leading sire Bold Ruler, Bold And Brave came back at 4 to win the seven furlong Royal Palm Handicap over Bold Tactics and was second in a pair of six furlong stakes events in Florida.
In the stud, Bold And Brave’s primary contribution has been the superb mare Bold ‘n Determined. Bold ‘n Determined was one of the top 3-year-old fillies in the nation in 1980 while giving Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk a battle for the Eclipse award. She won 16 of 20 career starts while earning nearly $950,000. In the Maskette Mile at Belmont
Bold ‘n Determined, shown wins the 1980 Acorn Stakes, was one of Bold Moon’s top Thoroughbred runners.
The Thoroughbred stallion Bold Moon (pictured) sired top Thoroughbreds such as Kentucky Oaks winner Bold ‘n Determined, as well as stakes-winning Quarter Horses like Bold Love.
