Mexican Bred Challenge Futurity
NO ATTAIN
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Mexican Bred Challenge Futurity, cre- ated to take the place of the Mexico Bred Juvenile Challenge, is exclusively for Mexico breds enrolled in the AQHA Challenge pro- gram. The race has been held for three seasons and was won by Shiney Six in 2014, Game Sambaso in 2015 and La Escuincle in 2016. This year, there were 62 entrants in the trial races that were held Oct. 22.
The 10 finalists came back for the finals of the race on Nov. 12. With a total purse
of $3’011,000 pesos ($157,726 US dollars approx.), the sorrel gelding No Attain won the heated race. He is owned by Hacienda San Martín Notario and trained by José Ángel Ambrosio Medina.
In the trials, No Attain recorded the second fastest time of :17.506, just one hundredth below the :17.494 reported by the Fearless Fritz colt Fearless Kid; both were in the betting preferences to win.
While in the gates, Divina Jess (#4) could not stand the pressure of confinement, lost control and was withdrawn from the race, postponing the start for a few minutes.
Once settled, the race began with an excellent start by the grey Clasic Chic (#2) who set out to lead the group. Fearless Kid (#4) had some fric- tion with Hot Rabbits (#3) and Elegant Danny (#1), but immediately recovered and took his route through the center of the field. No Attain (#8) attacked the track on the right side and
moved toward the center, but was straightened by rider José Ángel Ambrosio. The geld- ing showed off his wide and powerful stride, hunting down Fearless Kid and Clasic Chic, and leaving them in second and third place, respectively.
Stopping the clock at :17.47 for a 91 speed index, No Attain maintained his consistency and kept his speed index above 90 in his first six starts. Previously, he participated in the finals of the Garañones and Selecta Auction Futurities, qualifying for both, and finishing fifth in both. This Mexican Bred Challenge Futurity that he won is his fourth triumph from six performances. The win generated earnings of $1,264,620 pesos (approximately $66,245 US).
No Attain (Bullish One-La Chuchena, This Snow Is Royal) was raised in Sinaloa at Cuadra La Presita, who consigned the gelding to the 2016 Yearling Selecta Auction where
he was acquired by José Caso Maurer for his Cuadra San Martín Notario.
“I confess that I was very nervous.” said
the still young horseman José Caso Maurer, who began racing four years ago. “Even in the saddle, I saw the horse very attentive and calm. That gave me confidence that he would have
a great race. My nerves turned to an overflow- ing emotion when I saw him start well. At that
time, I did not know what was going on in my head,
I just remember shouting ‘Work Attain!’, trying to push him.
“My screams became more intense when I saw that for
the 200 yards he ran very close to Fearless Kid and had some advantage, ridden well by José Ángel Ambrosio, establishing his dominance over the group. Seeing him cross the finish line in first place and posing with him in the win- ner’s circle is the most intense emotion I have felt, because although we have participated
in four futurity finals, we had not won any,” continued José Caso. “This achievement has marked my life forever.
“No Attain will take a well-deserved rest and will return to train to participate in the derbies of 2018. I recognize and thank the excellent training of my friend Ismael Parra who, in my opinion, is one of the best coaches nowadays, as well as to all those who col- laborate on the cuadra. Thanks to those who have believed in us, to my friend Dr. Anselmo Aguilar, also to my partner Luis Orozco, to my family, to my children who are the ones who move my world, and to all the people who have expressed a good wish for us.”
Fearless Kid (Fearless Fritz-Teller Jessie), who finished second in the Mexico and Selecta Auction futurities, repeated this position again
