Mexico Breeders’ Derby
SOLIAT
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
There were 19 entrants in the $733,320 pesos (approximately $38,583 US) 440-yard Mexico Breeders’ Derby. Two trials were run on Sept. 30 for the only restricted derby for Mexican bred horses.
The top qualifier from the trials was fastest qualifier Dancer Fishers (:21.60), followed by Soliat (second to Dancer Fishers in :21.60) and AG Navigating Streak (third to Dancer Fishers in :21.62). Trial winner Sea Mummsy scratched from Cuadra El Manantial on Oct. 15, leaving nine finalists.
Soliat had the attention of the public by mak- ing a team entry with Takin Cartel, and closing odds of 0.40 for each peso bet to first place.
The distance and waterlogged track for the finals required exceptional physical condition and great skill from the riders. Dancer Fishers (#4) and Soliat (#9) set the pace with Dancer Fishers drifting sharply outwards despite the efforts of his jockey to straighten him, caus- ing the colt to come into contact with Zoom Horse (#7). Soliat had no trouble and reached the wire first, while AG Navigating Streak finished second and Dancer Fishers third.
Soliat (Danny Cartel-Toles, Ought To Be First) won the third of the four derbies reserved for Mexican bred three year olds in :21.67 (SI 98) under the experienced riding
of Eddi Cuéllar. In prior
issues of Speedhorse, we have
recorded his most recent
achievements, which consist
of 10 wins in 14 starts, with
wins in the 2016 Mexican
Breeders’ Futurity and Derby. He also won both the Mexico and Garañones Derbies, and was second in the Selecta Auction Futurity.
In 2009, it was Ze Dancer (Corona Straws-Ze Table Dancer, by Zevi TB) who upset the Derbies for Mexican breds. At that time, the Mexico Derby did not exist as it was run for the first time in 2011, and the Mexico Breeders’ Derby was run at 400 yards. Now, both Ze Dancer and Soliat are winners of three Derbies in their category.
Soliat was bred in Sinaloa by Cuadra La Presita, saddled by trainer Oscar Romo García, and he is owned by Rancho El Suspiro. The geld- ing added $307,944 pesos (approximately $16,202 US) to take his total earnings to nearly 2.9 million pesos in his successful career. Soliat has a New Track record at 300 yards, set in the Mexico Derby where he earned a 108 speed index.
AG Navigating Streak (Jess Navigating-Big Time To Streak) finished second under José Ángel Ambrosio Medina for Cuadra El Delirio and trainer Juvencio Vázquez Carmona. He is of Alejandro Garza Garza’s breeding.
Third went to Dancer Fishers (Ze Dancer-Natalia Fishers), who had Yair Daniel Báez Soto aboard. The colt is owned by Rancho Humilde and trained by
Ramón Guerrero Trejo. He was bred by Felix Bañuelos.
Takin Cartel (Danny Cartel-Takin Cash SLC), Zoom Horse (Sea Horse Corona- Mighty Zoom), BR Florentino (Royal Florentino-Regal Fortune), Sea Chico (Sea Horse Corona-Speednchico), El Senior Chickuma (Senior Solo–To Chickuma) and Malak Fritz (Fearless Fritz–Gigli) completed the field.
