Alfonso Patiño Martínez Aceves Classic
DANCER CANDELARIO ZE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The fifth edition of this classic was run
in memory of breeder and horseman Alfonso Patiño Martínez Aceves. Nine horses were entered in the 300-yard race that had a purse of $196,700 pesos (approxi- mately $10,286 US).
Entrants must have participated in claim- ing races for $50,000 pesos ($2,615 dollars) or less during the course of the year. With this race, participants were trying to add the first classic win to their record. Hiclas Patriot, Another Prince and Dancer Candelario Ze received the betting preferences from the fans, in that order.
The race began with no mishaps and although Ramon Holland (#5) and Huge Heart (#2) took a slight advantage at the start to briefly assume the lead, they weakened before the rest of the group. Dancer Candelario Ze (#1) responded in an extraordinary way under Alejandro Gómez and assumed the command in a definitive way and was dueling with Hiclass Patriot (#3), who he surpassed by 3/4-lengths.
The gelding covered the distance in :15.75 while earning his second victory in 17 starts,
including one second and two third place finishes.
The 5-year-old gelding was bred in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, by Felix Bañuelos, a dear friend
in life of Don Alfonso,
the honoree of the race.

of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen and the Hipodromo de las Américas.
The gelding is owned by Cuadra Tlayeka and trained by Víctor Hugo Ramírez Moreno.
Don Alfonso Patiño, whom the race
is named after, won the Selecta Auction Futurity-RG3 three times with Chirina Glorys (1994), Glory Six (1999) and Guadalupe First (2001), who ran for his Cuadra Palenque.
