Whiskey And Rain came into the for the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 finals with the fifth fastest qualifying time after finishing second by a neck to the fastest qualifier. The 300-yard stakes carried a total purse of $209,275 and was held at Remington Park on March 25.
Whiskey And Rain stepped away from the 6-post on top in only her second out. The Paint filly had her nose in front and with plenty of hustle and encouragement
from jockey Francisco
Calderon, they held a nose lead
at the halfway point. They
finished a neck to the good,
stopping the clock at :15.278
to earn a 96 speed index.
The daughter of CRM Livewire also earned the first place check worth $81,830. That ups her lifetime earnings to $83,158. Her race record is one win out of two career starts. Her March 10
Sunburst Stakes-RG3
trial heat was her first out. She races for owner Dunn Ranch and trainer Monty Arrossa, and was bred in Oklahoma by Dunn Ranch.
“This is a home grown filly,” said trainer Arrossa. “She is really nice with a great disposition. She is super smart and everyone at the barn liked her. She is always trying to do things right. She showed promise in her schooling races, and is good in the gate and in the paddock. She came out of the trials
really good so we just kept
her happy until the finals. She ran a big race there. We will stay in Oklahoma with her because there is a good program for Paints. We will probably aim for the next futurity. We have a great team here at Remington Park and they take pride in their work.”
Fourth fastest qualifier Mt Ultima Livewire APHA (CRM Livewire-Mt Pyc) stepped up her game in the finals. She
finished second for owner Gerald Eaves and trainer Eddie D. Willis. Jimmy Brooks was handling the reins. Js Flying Chicken APHA (Flying Cowboy 123 QH-Eye Opening Chick) was the tenth qualifier, just squeaking into the finals. The gelding ran a big race in the finals to bank third place money. The fillies were center stage at Sunland Park for the Sunburst Stakes-RG3. The race was a 350-yard dash that carried a $100,000 purse for three-year-old fillies.
KJ Daddys Money showed how grit and determination paid back the money. The bay filly broke from the outside on top and with ground eating strides, she had a head at the halfway point. Jockey Adrian Ramos entered with lots of hustle approaching the wire and they finished a neck to the
good in wire-to-wire style,
stopping the timer in :17.338
for a 102 speed index.
The daughter of Big Daddy Cartel earned the first place check worth $60,000 for owners Ruben Mares
and John and Kathy Lee. Wesley Giles was in charge of conditioning.
Bred in New Mexico by John and Kathy Lee, KJ Daddys Money is out
of lightly raced KJ Kiss Me Goodbye. KJ Daddys Money is her only foal.
“We had clear sailing on the outside, that seemed to help,” said trainer Giles. “This was her first out after a long layoff, so we were really happy with her performance. She is kind of a mischievous filly and we have learned to get along with her and not against her. We send the pony with her in the mornings just
to stay out of trouble. Adrian (Ramos) does a
great job with her and lets her get rolling before asking her for anything. She is a home raised filly by her owners
and we are looking down the road at Ruidoso or maybe Albuquerque this summer.”
KJ Daddys Money in
her previous start on Aug. 7, 2022, won the $379,527 Zia Futurity-RG1. She was also third in the New Mexican Spring Fling and a finalist in the Mountain Top Futurity-RG2.
Fred Danley trainee Fine Am Eye (Eye Am King-Starsmith) dead-heated in second place with stablemate Wood Dee Queen (Eye Am King-Miss Woody Dee). Multiple stakes finalist Fine Am Eye’s connections include owner Backdoor Thoroughbreds LLC and jockey Jose Ortiz, who had the riding assignment. Multiple stakes placed Wood Dee Queen is owned by J & SM Inc. and Don and M. Lane Reynolds. She was ridden by jockey Sergio Becerra Jr.
