Old South Derby
PARTI WAGON
by Tracy Gantz
In his first start for owner/trainer Willie Simien Jr., Parti Wagon won his April 19 trial for the Old South Derby at Delta Downs by an easy 1 1/2-lengths. His
time of :17.564 for 350 yards only gave Parti Wagon the ninth-fastest qualifying time, but that didn’t mat- ter when it came time for the finals.
Favored at 2-1 in the finals, Parti Wagon broke fourth under jockey Rolando Pina. They dueled with rivals, with Parti Wagon prevailing for the win by 1/2-length in :17.298, posting a 98 speed index.
It was the first stakes victory for Parti Wagon, but his third consecutive win. Last year, Parti Wagon qualified for several futurities, his fourth with a rough trip in the Old South Futurity his best effort.
Joe Davis bred Parti Wagon out of 3-time win- ner Sheisassheis. She has produced 100% winners from three starters, including top money earner Heisasgoodasheis, winner of the 2016 Gordon Mobley Futurity. Parti Wagon is her second stakes winner.
Lester Colomb Jr.’s homebred Mia Jet In (Jet Black Patriot-PYC First Prize Mia) finished second under jockey Luciano Duenez for trainer Kenneth Weeks. The filly ran second in the 2018 Old South Futurity and was elevated to third in the Evangeline Downs Futurity upon a disqualification.
John Hamilton rode Thinkin Man (Carters Cartel-Long Stemmed Roses) to third for owner Brian Gunder and trainer Bobby Martinez. Thinkin Man finished third in the 2018 Governors Stakes.
Dominyun Cartel (Dominyun-Dreamers Cartel), Melas Miracle (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Wallstreet Darlin)), Anasttasia (The Louisiana Cartel-Las Alamitos), Jess C Me Zoom (Jess Zoomin-Lajollaslastthought), TF Rowdy Cartel (Coronado Cartel-Cashy La Jolla), Eye Like Corona (Cartel Success-Eye On You) and RKM Perry Full Moon (First Moonflash-La Dona Cartel) completed the order of finish.
Sam Houston Classic
HAWKEYE
by John Moorehouse
Hawkeye scooted to his second consecutive career stakes victory, prevailing in the $50,000 Sam Houston Classic-G2 on May 25.
Trained by Josue Ponce, Hawkeye made a clean break from the outside starting gate in a seven-horse field and was running a close second behind Stone Cold Leader before overtaking him during the stretch to win the race by a neck. The 440-yard trip took :21.687, registering a 95 speed index. Victor Urieta Jr., did the riding.
Home-bred by Bobby Cox, Hawkeye is a four-year- old gelding who now holds six wins in 12 career starts. He’s posted back-to-back victories, both in stakes company, entering this race coming off a win in the Harris County Stakes in what marked his first out on this track. He’s also qualified for a couple of lucrative stakes races earlier in his career: the 2017 All American Futurity-G1 and last year’s Rainbow Derby-G1. The $30,000 payday from this victory increased his total bankroll to $207,835.
Cox also owns No Fees, the dam of Hawkeye, and a three-time stakes winner in her own right. The 2001 mare logged two of her three stakes victories at Sam Houston Race Park.
Stone Cold Leader (Brookstone Bay-Sheza Classy Leader) finished more than 3-lengths clear in second place for owner Patrick Richardson and trainer Nason Eschete. Rolando Pina was aboard Stone Cold Leader, who already has three stakes wins of his own.
Sixes Flash (Streakin Sixes-Viborita) placed third by 3/4-length for Rancho Herradura, LLC. The Jaime Hernandez trainee had Rolando Cabrera in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Send Candy And Pop (Jodys Money Pop-Send Your Candy), Gianni Moons U (One Famous Gianni-Chalinashake), Sweet Annie GL (One Sweet Jess-Grande Annee) and Jettin Feature (Cartels Feature-Feature Me Jettin). One Dream At A Time scratched.
Sam Houston Juvenile
EXPEDYTE
by Tracy Gantz
Expedyte didn’t quite make it into the Sam Houston Futurity-G2, but he did the next best thing by capturing the $45,970 Sam Houston
Juvenile on May 3. It was an impressive perfor- mance. Breaking fourth under jockey Jesse Levario, Expedyte rallied quickly to pass horses and take the lead. As the 2-1 favorite, he scored by 3/4-length in :16.973 for 330 yards.
Expedyte had won his Sam Houston Futurity trial in his racing debut, but didn’t qualify for the finals. Josue Ponce trains the colt for owner Raedele Phipps. At the 2018 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, Phipps bought Expedyte for $14,000 from breeder Bobby Cox.
Cox bred Expedyte out of winner Shazumba. The second dam, Cox homebred All About Ease, won the 2004 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 and has also produced stakes winners Chazaq, Zoomin With Ease, Katharsis, and All About Torque.
Gary Hartstack’s homebred GBH Streakinforgirls (Ivory James-Streakin For Toni) fin- ished second under jockey Jose Martinez for trainer Leon Bard. GBH Streakinforgirls debuted in his trial for the Sam Houston Futurity and finished second.
Arturo Davila III, who won the Sam Houston Futurity with Trump My Record, trains the third- place Sam Houston Juvenile finisher Baby Licious (FDD Dynasty-Da Licious). Eddie Sanchez piloted the filly for owner Javier De Los Santos Muzquiz. Previously, Baby Licious had won once and finished second twice in three starts.
Followed by My Favorite Q H (Favorite Cartel- Miss QH, Lovethewayyourun (One Dashing Eagle- Duplicate Check), Temptinator (Tempting Dash-A Game Dame), Triplevodka Blu Byu (Triple Vodka- Eyema Blue), Ima Dashin Leader (Down N Dash- Cartel Leader) and No Sins Here (Game Patriot-Sin Tacha Reina).
