Delta 550 Stakes-RG3
STONE COLD LEADER
by Michael Compton
Stone Cold Leader is a stone-cold runner. Owned by Patrick Richardson and trained by Willie Simien, Stone Cold Leader easily captured the $27,100 Delta 550 Stakes at Delta Downs on May 4, running his current win streak to 4, including 3 consecutive stakes.
Ridden by his regular pilot Rolando Pina, Stone Cold Leader flashed his customary early zip away from the gate in his initial start at the 550-yard dis- tance. He dueled throughout before edging clear late to report home 1-length to the good over runner-up Jes A Spitfire and jockey Jose Rodriguez. Stone Cold Leader stopped the timer in :27.004, earning a 99 speed index as the odds-on favorite.
Bred by Mark Michel, Stone Cold Leader is now a winner in 11 of 19 outings, and the $15,000 winner’s share of this purse increased his bankroll to $450,333. His current stakes win streak began in December of last year when he took down top prize in the $160,000 Evangeline Downs Derby.
Stone Cold Leader is out of 3-time winner Sheza Classy Leader. She has produced 100% money earn- ers from six starters. Stone Cold Leader is her first stakes winner.
Simien also sent out the second-place finisher, Jes A Spitfire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Delightful), who offered game chase but had to settle for the place spot. The 5-year-old mare is owned by Vickie Davis and was ridden by Jose Rodriguez.
WW Showtime (First Prize Perry-WW Family Tradition) and jockey Antonio Alberto finished third for owner Victoria Galindo and trainer Alejandro Garza.
Sixes Flash (Streakin Sixes-Viborita), BJS Magic Wings (Drago Wings-Magic Shine), Im Mighty Fast (Mighty Corona-Sheza Fast Doll), and Struttinmyjewelsoff (Struttin to Beduino-Jewel Don’t Back Down) completed the order of finish. Volcom Royalty was scratched.
Develop A Plan Stakes-G3
GUNSMOKE B
by Michael Compton
Gunsmoke B made it four straight victories and back-to-back stakes wins with a New Track Record-setting performance in the $37,000 Develop
A Plan Stakes-G3 at Delta Downs on June 1. Ridden by Antonio Alberto, Gunsmoke B broke
alertly and vied for the early lead with Gunna Be Alright. He shrugged off that rival in the lane and edged clear late to score by 3/4- length, stopping the timer for 300 yards in :14.779 and eclipsing Louisianaschoolboy’s track record of :14.978 set in 2013.
It was the second win of the year for Gunsmoke B, who captured the Delta Downs Dash on April 10. All told, the 6-year-old gelding is now a winner in six of 25 starts and boasts earnings of $89,250 for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and trainer Alberto Solis.
Bielau Oaks bred Gunsmoke B out of 4-time stakes winner Dashing Pana. She has produced 100% money earners from nine starters, including top money earner and New Track Record setter Daytona B, winner of six stakes races. Gunsmoke B is her second stakes winner.
Trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr. sent out the runner- up, Gunna Be Alright (Heza Fast Dash-JJ Streakin Illusion). Jockey David Alvarez was aboard the graded stakes winner for owner Gladney 1 LLC. Gunna Be Alright’s final time of :14.902 in finishing second also would have lowered the track record. The sorrel geld- ing was bred in Louisiana by JoBaya Foreman. Vallerro (Valiant Hero-Perry Queen Bug) finished third with Heriberto Aguiar-Orozco riding for owner Ascension Cepeda and trainer Hector Alcala. George Seward bred the sorrel gelding in Colorado. Vallerro’s :14.917 would have also lowered the standard. Followed by Louisiana Seis (The Louisiana Cartel-Seis Passes), Jess a Boy (Mr Jess Perry-Aquafina), Thecartelofmiracle (Tough and Good-Its Jess a Miracle) and Heza Magic Coronas (Coronas Leaving You-Dee Magic Patriot). Corona Down Perry, Di Maria & SS Classyjess scratched.
