 2019 Equine Industry Vision Award
Tom Lenz, DVM, MS, DACT, was named the recipient of the 2019 Equine Industry Vision Award. Presented by Zoetis, the award showcases an individual’s or organization’s innovation and commitment to making a positive impact on the equine industry. Lenz has held numerous leader- ship roles, including being a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), chairman of the welfare committees of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Horse Council, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and
the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association. Lenz currently serves on the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. In addition to the Equine Industry Vision Award, Dr. Lenz has also been recognized with the AAEP’s Distinguished Service Award in 2005, its Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award
in 2009, and the AAEP’s highest honor, the Sage Kester Beyond the Call Award in 2018, as well as the AVMA’s 2010 Animal Welfare Award.
The Right Horse Initiative Awards $50,000
Drifter’s Hearts of Hope, Love This Horse Equine Rescue and the West Virginia Rescue Network will receive Innovation Grants of between $12,500 and $25,000 each from The Right Horse Initiative, a program of the WaterShed Animal Fund. The grants reward innovation and collabora- tion by supporting organizations thinking creatively about how to rehome at-risk horses.
AAEP Receives $100,000 Grant
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) received a $100,000 gift
from the Schuler Family Foundation in Honolulu, Hawaii. The AAEP will use the funds to help expand its outreach and impact through the award of more grants and scholarships for the sake of horses and those who care for horses, with priorities on edu- cation, equine research, and benevolence programs that include disaster preparedness and relief as well as support for horses at risk or in transition.
Sun Downs in Kennewick, Washington, ended their mixed meet that began on April 27 and concluded on May 12. In the photo above, Brad Boyce presents the meet leaders with belt buckles, in- cluding leading Quarter Horse trainer Jose A. Rosales Gomez, leading rider Jaime E. Lopez, and leading Thoroughbred trainer Amy Nelson.
