The photo on page 188 show Tami Purcell aboard Dashing Folly after their victory in the 1996 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos. Tami grew up in Dripping Springs, Texas, where she originally planned on following in her grandfather’s footsteps by becoming a firefighter. While a cadet with the Austin fire department, she began cleaning stalls and helping out a trainer part time. She changed her mind about firefighting and dove into horse racing where she started loping horses and then stepping onto the track. She rode her first competitive race at the age of 18 in 1981, and worked as a jockey until retiring in 2000. During that time, she rode in 4,910 Quarter Horse races, winning 83 stakes races and earners of over $10.2 million. Tami is the only woman to win the All American Futurity-G1, with 4-time Champion Corona Cash in 1997; and the Champion of Cham- pions-G1, aboard World Champion Dashing Folly in 1996.
Tami was honored with the Mildred N. Vessels Award for Special Achievement in American Quarter Horse racing in 1996, and was inducted into the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2013. After retiring from racing, Tami went on to ride in the barrel racing circuit where she became a two- time Wrangler Nationals Finals Rodeo Qualifier.
“I didn’t really set out thinking I was going to do anything spectacular. I just thought that if I could make a little bit of money, I’d be happy as long as I could do it on the back of a horse. But, I was ever so blessed that my career went beyond what I really set out to do.” – Tami Purcell, Speed- horse January 2014
