   TINYS CORONA QUEEN
2018 Broodmare of the Year
by Larry Thornton
Breeding the next generation is more than a race record . . .
What do you look for when selecting
a racehorse? Many people start with pedigree, then conformation comes into it. To some, it is the other way around. They start with conformation and then the pedigree is considered. No matter how you look at it, it’s a combination of factors that leads us to buy our next racehorse. This is where the story
of Tinys Corona Queen begins, as she was selected as a race prospect by Jim Helzer, who with his wife Marilyn have raced some of the industry’s finest horses, including the great Refrigerator, a two-time AQHA Racing World Champion. Now, Tinys Corona Queen has gone from a race prospect to become the 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year.
The 2018 starters that enabled Tinys Corona Queen to win the Broodmare of the Year title did it with a record seven starts, four wins, and three stakes winners that won four stakes as well as one
stakes placed runner with combined earnings of $634,262. They were the 2018 stakes winners Lynnder 16, Reacher 16 and First Of 15 with 2017 stakes winner Hardtoget as a stakes placed runner for the year. Then, we add winners No Questions Now 15 and Just Like Blane. Tinys Corona Queen’s foals put her in the Top Five Dams of Money Earners, Top Five Dams of Stakes Winners and Top Five Dams of Stakes Wins categories, allowing her to garner the 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year title.
Jim Helzer recently told how he came to own Tinys Corona Queen. “I bought her at private treaty for $300,000. I bought two of them at the same time and I bought her to race. I was looking for a really good race prospect and she had an outstanding pedigree. I’m pretty picky about a horse and on a scale of one to ten, she was about an 8 1/2. Nice filly with a few flaws here and there, but a really nice filly.”
When we delve into the race record of Tinys Corona Queen, we find how mysterious some of our race prospects can be when it comes to success on the track as compared
to their potential for success on paper. Tinys Corona Queen went to the racetrack and earned a 90 speed index with one win in nine starts. She finished second once and third once with earnings of $12,246.
Helzer found his new race prospect to be
one of those mysteries. He explained, “She was a frustrating filly. She was 100% sound all the time, but she was one of those that would work lights out in the morning. I mean she would always have a bullet work. It didn’t make any difference. I could work her lap and tap or work her out of the gate. I mean, she just blew them away. But there was something about the night, and I tried different things on her, but she would just not perform at night. Just would not perform.”
