  indiana live QhRai Derby
Jhony ReD
by John Moorehouse
Jhony Red, the biggest longshot in the field for the Indiana Live QHRAI Derby, scored a surprising victory in the $105,160 stakes event held June 30 at Indiana Downs.
At odds of nearly 17-1, Jhony Red was a lucrative choice at the betting window. He also paid off handsomely for owner Francisco Vega, who reaped a $57,838 payday that boosted the 3-year-old colt’s lifetime bankroll to $60,476 after six career outs.
This marked Jhony Red’s first career victory. His rookie campaign con- sisted of two winless starts, and his prior 2012 record included a second-place finish in a May 25 maiden at Indiana Downs, followed by a third-place effort in trials for the Indiana Live QHRAI Derby. In finishing third, Jhony Red covered the 350 yards in :18.160,
good enough to snare the 10th and final spot in the derby field.
The Loren Brocka trainee proved to be much quicker in the derby. Jhony Red made
a clean break out of the ninth gate and was running at or near the front for the entirety of the race. Jockey Harold Collins urged an extra gear out of the colt late in the competition, as Jhony Red came on strong from the outside
to snatch the lead from Mo Zoomo during the final few yards. Officially, Jhony Red won by a half-length margin, finishing in :17.687 and tally- ing a 98 speed index.
Vega also owns Special Gilda, the dam of Jhony Red. The 2002 Strawfly Special mare was lightly-raced, and Jhony Red is her only starter thus far from two registered foals. Gerald Case Rogers bred Jhony Red in Illinois.
With jockey Victor Olivo in the irons, Mo Zoomo (Shazoom-Stylish Form) secured run- ner-up honors in the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby. Sacramento Chavez owns and trains the colt. You Mitey Right (Hotdoggin-Mitey Mans Missel), the second biggest underdog
in the field at 16-1 odds, finished third. You Mitey Right is owned by Edward Scott and trained by Gene Cox. Jockey Tony Crissup drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was Eye Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Eye Betta Kim), Eye Slip By (Eye Yin You-Queen With A Title), This Panther Purrs (Panther Mountain-Nora Jane La Jolla), Valor And Glory (Valiant Hero-Mahlanka), BV Eye Am Ridin Easy (Mr Eye Opener-Easy Ridin Chick), TF First Pick (Dash To First Place-Pick Your Passion) and Pescado Fuente (Fishers Dash-Tuff Chiclet).

 all Canadian Classic
PouTnoKey
by Tracy Gantz
Poutnokey not only has collected a slew of Canadian stakes in his three years of rac- ing, he has never finished worse than fourth.
He was on his game once again when he captured the July 3 All Canadian Classic at Ajax Downs.
Drawn into post nine, Poutnokey avoided a chain reaction that began when favored
Jog My Memory veered out from post one. Poutnokey found a clear path
under jockey Scott Sterr and
came on late to edge another
closer, Had To Be Fandango,
on the extreme outside and
Jog My Memory on the rail.
Poutnokey won by a neck
over Had To Be Fandango in
:17.730 for the 350 yards.
Two riders lodged objec- tions, and after the stewards reviewed the replays, they disqualified Jog My Memory from third and placed him
last. That elevated fourth-place finisher Rockish into third.
Pete Schoeler bred Poutnokey in Alberta, Canada, and has campaigned the 4-year-old gelding solely in his home country. In 2010
at two, Poutnokey won the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-RG3 and Alberta Stallion Futurity. At 3 in 2011 he added the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby and Alberta Stallion
Derby. Stan Webb took over his training this year.
Poutnlori, like her son, won the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity.
The mare also captured
the Alberta-bred Derby. Poutnokey is the mare’s
first starter and winner. Her second starter, Poutn With Speed, is a 2-year-old of 2012.
Had To Be Fandango (Hadtobenuts-Grim Fandango) qualified the fastest
for the Classic. Chelsey Willick rode the 4-year- old filly for trainer Bryn Robertson and owners Carol and Jaime Robertson. Last year Had To Be Fandango won the Maple Leaf Derby.
Michelle Love piloted Rockish (Rocky Jones-A Mere Formality) for owner Full Circle Racing and trainer Greg Watson. An 8-year- old gelding, Rockish won four in a row at Ajax last year, including the Classic, which he also won in 2008.
Completing the field were Rydals Rocket (Heza Motor Scooter-Lady Muffit), Miss Bedlan (Mr Eye Opener-Elainas Snowplow), Ten To Louisiana (Jess Louisiana Blue-Almost A Ten), A Shore Thing (Ocean Runaway- Sheza Special Chick), Lookingforagoodtime (Furyofthewind-Dreams For Lyndsie), and Jog My Memory (Jody O Toole-Is It Memorex). Cameron Dash was scratched.
