TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2
SS PokeR FACe DReAm
by Tracy Gantz
SS Poker Face Dream has done everything asked of him and more. The colt not only qualified with the fastest time for the TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2, he has kept his record spotless in four starts.
Beginning his career at Sam Houston Race Park in March, SS Poker Face Dream scored in a 300-yard maiden race by two lengths under Carlos Castro, who has partnered him in each of his starts. Two months
later, they captured a Sam
Houston allowance event at
300 yards by 1 3/4 lengths.
Owner Juan Carlos Perez and trainer Cieto Martinez Jr. brought SS Poker Face Dream to Retama Park for the Sires’ Cup trials. There he scored the biggest victory of his career to date, running off and hiding from his field by 2 1/4 lengths while
posting the best qualifying time of :17.774 for 350 yards.
SS Poker Face Dream bettered that time in
the June 30 final. As the even-money favorite, he broke on top, veered slightly outward after a few strides, and then straightened away to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Castro hand-rode him to the wire, and they still stopped the timer in :17.555, only .315
off the track record. The quick clocking earned SS
Poker Face Dream a speed index of 106 as well as $40,780.
Ronnie Stewart’s Double S Farm bred SS Poker Face Dream in Texas from the winning Behold A Beduino mare Precious Serendipity. The mare also has a perfect record of four winners from four starters, though SS Poker Face Dream is her first stakes winner. The colt’s sire, mul- tiple stakes winner Primetime Dream, stands at Double S.
Jerry Windham’s homebred Jess A Swingin (Shazoom-Jess An Illusion) closed for second under Luis Ramirez. Trained by Tommy Zarate, the filly has finished third in all three of her earlier races.
Winners Adversary (Winners Award- Wicked Adversary), owned and bred by Pete Scarmardo, finished third after winning his trial in his racing debut. Ricardo Aguirre rode him both times for trainer Leon Bard.
Completing the field were RDD Dashin Effort (Dashin Bye-Miss Native Effort), Chickie Kool (Country Chicks Man-First Kool Baby), Diego La Jolla (Adrians Jolla-Joyalty), Jess Jumpn (Mr Jess Perry-Eyesa Jumpn), She Will Reign (He Will Reign-Dueling Maid), and Pieceofperfection (Furyofthewind- Princess Sarah Lee). RC Had To Be My Day was scratched.

TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby-RG3
JumPn BeAu CHiCk
by Tracy Gantz
Jumpn Beau Chick may have still been a maiden going into the June 30 TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby-RG3 at Retama Park, but she was battle-tested. Only close photos kept her from at least two victories, and she had only once finished worse than third.
The filly didn’t need the photo-finish camera to determine her first win. Away in third from post five in the Derby final, she stormed to the front with
jockey Mario Trujillo. Once
on top, she pulled away to a
half-length victory in a swift
:19.763. That gave her a 106
speed index and was only .219
off the Retama track record.
In two futurity trials last year, Jumpn Beau Chick nearly got there, losing
by just a neck. Owned by Francisco Garza and trained by Roberto Madrigal, she also finished second in the
TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2 last August at Retama. In her Derby trial, she ran second to fastest-qualifier Runaway Trs Seis, her time of :20.094 the third fastest.
Sergio Garza bred Jumpn Beau Chick in Texas. A daughter of the Chicks Beduino stallion Jumpn Chic, Jumpn Beau Chick is out of the Make It Anywhere mare Beaukas, who finished third in the 2006 Manor Downs
Futurity-G1 and Retama Park Futurity-G1. Jumpn Beau Chick is her first starter.
Sue Fikes’ homebred Loves Brown Sugar (Prime Talent- Loves Easter Bunny) finished second in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby. Kie Mushinski conditions the filly, who was ridden by Santos Carrizales. Loves Brown Sugar broke her maiden at Retama last year and most recently ran second in an allowance event at Sam
Houston and second in her Derby trial. Judd Kearl trains Wagon Empire (PYC
Paint Your Wagon-Royalnative Empress), who ran third under jockey Ricky Ramirez. J J Racing owns the colt. Third in last year’s Remington Park Juvenile Stakes, Wagon Empire also won an allowance race at Lone Star Park in November. He finished third in his Derby trial behind Runaway Trs Seis and Jumpn Beau Chick.
Rounding out the field were Runaway Trs Seis (Tres Seis-Runaway Cindy), Jess A Comment (First Comment-Jess Quick Fun), Country Chick Moons (Country Chicks Man-Say Six Moons), Nash Jolla (Adrians Jolla-Joyalty), Pink Cartel (Jet Cartel-Shades Of Pink-TB), Reign Of Greatness (He Will Reign-Dueling Maid), and Making Deals (Streakin Sixes-Excellent Deal).
