fter finishing second in the King William
Handicap last year, Bertha Venation would not be denied this year. The 5-year-old mare came flying up the center of the track to beat The Hot List in the $20,000 handicap held July 7 at Retama Park.
The victory was Bertha Venation’s seventh in 20 starts, and fourth stakes win. Jose Luis Salazar’s mare has notched two stakes wins during the current Retama Park meet; she also won the Selma Stakes-Div. 1.
Eusevio Huitron saddled Bertha Venation, who started the 350-yard event fourth behind early The Hot List. Bertha Venation’s rider, Santos Carrizales, made his move and took the lead, beating favored The Hot List by a neck.
Bertha Venation covered the distance in :17.779, posting a 99 speed index. The $11,800 first-place prize improved her lifetime earnings to $148,881.
Foaled in Arkansas, Bertha Venation was bred by Corner K Quarter Horses LLC out of Dash To Glory, who had a distinguished career on the track. Dash To Glory posted three stakes victories during her career, which included 14 wins and $83,000 in earnings. As a broodmare, Dash To Glory has foaled eight offspring, seven of whom have made starts. Bertha Venation is the only stakes winner, although her half-brother Rampage is stakes-placed.
The Hot List (Streakin La Jolla-Short List) finished second for owner Eleazar Martinez. The Yasmine Fierro trainee had Luis Ramirez in the irons. Ja Jess Perfect (Mr Jess Perry-Ja Curiosity) hit the board in third for owner Joe Allen and trainer Steven Kearl. Rodrigo Vallejo drew the riding assignment.

to win the 2011 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs with Painted Sable, but the filly finished second. The partners won that race this year with Runaway Wagon, and on the same weekend, Painted Sable became a stakes winner by taking the July 8 Hill Country Dash Stakes at the Gillespie County Fair.
Painted Sable bobbled a little early, but she responded to jockey Ricardo Aguirre and quickly took command. Favored Shake Em Special Pop closed late, but he could not catch the filly, who won by a length. Her time of :21.682 gave her a 106 speed index and was just .081 off the track record for the 440 yards.
Lewis Jordan trains Painted Sable. She had come close to winning a stakes several times. In addition to her Firecracker Derby placing, she ran second in the 2010 Manor Downs Futurity-G1 and third in the 2011 Sam Houston Derby Challenge. Earlier this year, she finished third in the Sam Houston Distaff Challenge.
