PAINT ME TURNPIKE
by Danny Camp
Paints & Appaloosas were at center stage on March 26 at Remington Park. There was $127,600 to be divided among the fastest in the
Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. It was Paint Me Turnpike who banked the $49,702 1st place check, crossing the wire in :15.534 for an 84 speed index. Paint Me Turnpike, a 2-year-old filly, stepped away from the 2-post near the front of the pack & held her position
through the contest. Rider
Cody Smith provided some
encouragement and the filly
stuck her nose in front just in
time. Paint Me Turnpike won
her trial on March 16, going
wire-to-wire for a length win
and the 2nd fastest qualifying
position. She’s now 2-for-2 and
has earned $53,140 for owner/
breeder Nolan D. Pevehouse &
trainer Matt Whitekiller, who
also won this race last year.
Paint Me Turnpike is out of
3-time winner Turnpikes Texas Hero, a 100% money earning producer including Champions High Class Turnpike & Wagon On Turnpike.
Cody Smith, the regular pilot for Paint
Me Turnpike, said, “She is a hard horse to read. She was hard to break. She was very flighty. But, when she settled, she seemed to come into herself and after a schooling race everything
came together with her.” Cody went on to say, “She is
a home bred filly and I have
a long history with Nolan Pevehouse and trainer Matt Whitekiller. We are headed to the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity with her the last week of racing in Remington. Our team won the Speedhorse Triple Crown for Paints and Appaloosas, and I also won the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Derby on Painted Turnpike.”
According to Matt Whitekiller, “She is
a nervous filly and frets somewhat. She was behind in her training, but she stepped up when the money was on the line. These races are hard to win and it takes the whole crew from the farm to the winners circle.”
Owners Wade & Charles Leggett and trainer Dee Keener took 2nd & 3rd. In 2nd under Cody Jensen was Sexy Painted Wagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Sexy Senorita), and in 3rd was Cl Trap Queen (Sf Royal Quick Flash-Texas Showboat) under Ivan Carnero. Followed by Crm Radio Flyer (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Elaina Go Go), Dtl Josie Wales (Judys Lineage-Josie Cartel), Bp Apollitical Sun (Apollitical Jess-Baileys N Sunsets), Dtl Fast Flyin Tex (Texas Six-Flyin Candy), Phq Goodbye Earl (Awesome Chrome-Sayonara), Kc Texas Lady (Texas Six-Kaywantsafastone) & Ho Lotta Love (Capo de Capi-A Little Lovin) .
