Four Corners Futurity-G3
GOOD JOB HONEY
by Michael Cusortelli
Good Job Honey overcame a less-than- perfect break from post 5 to win the Aug. 9, 350-yard Four Corners Futurity-G3 at SunRay Park.
Ridden by Albert Medrano and aided
by an 8-mph tail wind, Good Job Honey covered her trip in :17.345 while earning her first career stakes victory and recording a lifetime-best 93 speed index. The filly was sent to post as the 2-1 second choice in the full field of 10 2-year-olds, and her win- ning margin was a neck from 32-1 longshot Mango Chick.
Ken Grisham saddled Good Job Honey for his wife, Shirley Grisham, and John T.L. Jones’ J Bar 7 Ranch LLC of Quanah, Texas.
“She didn’t get away quick, but once she got away from the other horses, she really quickened for me,” stated Medrano. “It’s a good feeling when you know you have that kind of horse.”
Good Job Honey began her career at Ruidoso Downs on May 23, when she ran fourth in a 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial. She’s won all three of her outs since then, after she moved to Grisham’s barn.
“John T.L. Jones is a good friend of mine; he and I are from the same hometown,” said Grisham, a longtime New Mexico horse- man who, with his wife, was featured in
the spring issue of the New Mexico Horse Breeder magazine. “He offered us a half- ownership interest in this filly and sent her up to me.”
Good Job Honey thrived at SunRay Park. After she scored a convincing 1-length win in a 350-yard maiden special weight dash
on July 3, opening day of the track’s 36-day
meet, the filly three weeks later set the fastest qualify- ing time to the Four Corners Futurity on July 24 with a 3/4-length victory in the last of four trials.
“We supplemented her
to the trials,” Grisham said. “She hasn’t shown us any- thing but talent since she got here. She’s done everything we’ve asked of her.
“A lot of the credit for
this filly’s success goes to my assistant trainer, Daniel Apodaca,” the trainer added. “He’s done a wonderful job with her.”
Good Job Honey was bred by J Bar 7 Ranch. The filly is a 1/2-sister to Bye Bye Eagle Eye, a multiple graded stakes winner. Good Job Honey is one of four winners from as many starters foaled by Ally Kazaam.
All told, Good Job Honey has won three of four outs, and the $47,000 winner’s share of the $100,000 Four Corners Futurity purse increased her bankroll to $59,430.
Runner-up Mango Chick (Chicks Regard-Aleisha Elaine) has won one of three races and has earned $28,590 for her owner, Gary L. Thompson. The bay filly was ridden by Esgar Ramirez for trainer Lori Chavez.
Keith Spears’ Made To Dash (Tac It Like A Man- First Prize Corona) finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Good Job
Honey. An earner of $20,050 from five outs, the sorrel filly was ridden by Ivan Carnero for trainer Wes Giles.
Followed by Gianni Modo (One Famous Gianni-Chalinashake), Pilota On Fire (Mr Piloto-Happier Hour), Delightning Teller (Teller Cartel-Delightning Jess), Rebbeca Quick (Double Feature Jess-Crank It Quick), Whatta Tres Knockout (Tres Seis-Oh Whatta Knockout), An Agitator (American Runaway- Jess Shakem), and WR Smooth Move (Ivory James-WR Red Ace).
