John Deere Retama Park Juvenile Challenge
CARELESS LIGHTNING
by Danny Camp
The best athletes make it look easy. Larry
Payne came in to ride Careless Lightning in the 350-yard $83,520 John Deere Retama Park Juvenile Challenge on Aug. 8. Payne had ridden the gelding to victory in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG3 in June, so they were not strangers.
The jockey never panicked when they spotted the field a length leaving the 8-post with a stiff head wind. A couple of light
left-handed taps and they won
it for fun. Finishing a length
in front, Careless Lightning
stopped the clock in :18.007.
The 2-year-old gray gelding
has now won 3 of 5 tries,
including his last 3 in a row.
With the $38,419 first place
check, Careless Lightning now
has a total bankroll of $81,219
for owner Jesse M. Gibson.
The gelding was bred by Bobby Cox in Oklahoma, out of 2-time winner Corona
Edge. The mare has produced 100% money earners from 5 starters. Careless Lightning is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
“This horse is the real deal. He was a little shin sore his first out, but he gets better and better every day,” stated trainer Gilbert Aguirre. “Careless Lightning is a pleasure to be around and handle. When he trains, he’s all business.
Coming into the finals, he was sound, and he pulled up good. This horse is all business in the gates, but just doesn’t get away all that well. In the trials, he spotted the field 2-lengths and in the finals he gave everybody a length head start. This horse came out of the Heritage Place Sale and owner Jesse Gibson is great to work with. They are looking down the road at either the Dash For Cash Futurity or the Juvenile Championship at Lone Star in the fall.”
Luis Vivanco rode Careless Lightning in the trials, but also rode fastest qualifier Mals Famous Eagle for the Trey Wood barn, and that’s where Larry Payne stepped in. Careless Lightning is the 1st stakes winner for his sire American Runaway.
My Moment Of Fame (Jumpn Chic- Moment Of Epiphany) was 2nd under Luis Ramirez for Holly Hooper & trainer Angel Sanchez. Love Is Great (Jess Louisiana Blue- Next Great Love) was 3rd under Isaac Chapa for Israel Leal & trainer Salvador Flores. Followed by Gbh Gunsmoke (Ivory James-Streakin For Toni), Chula Kid (The Louisiana Cartel-Shoulda Bet Her), Pure D Rocket (First Wrangler-Pure D Annie), Mals Famous Eagle (One Famous Eagle- First A Princess), My Runaway Cartel (Carters Cartel-Fantastic Runaway), Shiner Blond (Make It Anywhere-Blond Cartel) & Sr Esmeralda (Red Storm Cat-Lets Get Fiscal).
