QHRAI Thanksgiving Turkey Give-A-Way
The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) held its first ever Turkey Give-A-Way on Nov. 19 in conjunction
with the local branch of the Salvation Army. Tom Mosley, QHRAI’s Director of Industry Relations, commented “Anderson and the sur- rounding communities have accepted us with open arms and the trainers, jockeys and other horsemen that we represent want to show our appreciation by helping out families that could use a little good cheer during the Thanksgiving Holiday.” The QHRAI gave free turkeys to 100
households on a first-come, first served basis, with people lining up three hours in advance. QHRAI Executive Director said, “We wished we could have supplied the entire county with a free turkey, but people were grateful for what we did have. Michigan Pushes For Expanded Gaming
The Michigan House of Representatives and Senate have approved legislation that lays the groundwork for expanded gaming at the state’s racetracks. The legislation awaits the Governor’s signature. The change will allow instant racing machines at racetracks and
will help slow the recent decline of the racing industry in the state due to the rapid growth of casinos and the lottery. Because of a 2004 constitutional amendment, tracks still have to receive approval from state and local voters.
Fargo May Race In 2013
North Dakota Horse Park was granted nine race days in 2013 by the state racing commis- sion, which deferred awarding funding until
a February meeting when final deposits from
tax funds are known. The funding comes from account deposit wagering and is then divided into purse money or promotions for the state’s two tracks, North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo and Chippewa Downs in Belcourt, which also received nine race days for 2013. North Dakota Horse Park, a non-profit organization, is expected to run their meet from July 28-Aug. 18.
Sunland Park Institutes Medication Policy
Sunland Park in El Paso, New Mexico, has instituted a new medication policy. Any trainer issued a positive ruling for a Class 1 or Class 2 drug will be barred from the grounds and their entries will not be accepted. The ruling extends to any trainer with current rulings against them. According to the Daily Racing Form, 11 trainers from Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma have already been denied stalls or informed
by mail that their entries will not be accepted. Trainers at Sunland are required to sign a docu- ment stating they are aware of the policy.
