Ocala Track Runs Quarter Horse Race
The Ocala Breeders’ Sales training track hosted live racing for the first time ever on Dec. 11, running two races—one for Quarter Horses—to activate the permit that would allow the facility to also operate a card room. The race was a good faith effort with Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association to work toward more Quarter Horse racing and a full race meet at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company (OBS) in the future. Any full race meet that involves a card room, casino or other gaming requires a full schedule of live racing and a
written signed agreement with the horsemen’s group. The FQHRA says plans for discussions of a full schedule of live racing are in the works. The two races were both allowance races—
one for Thoroughbreds and one for Quarter Horses. The Quarter Horse race was a $7,500 allowance to be run at 220 yards for 3-year-olds and upward which have never won two races
or which have not won a race in 2012. A field of eight faced the starter, with Jose Gallegos’ Call Me Easy Money easily winning by 1 1/4 lengths under jockey Diego Gomez for trainer Albino Rossi.
Texas Sets 2013 Race Days
On Dec. 18, the Texas Racing Commission approved a total of 73 Quarter Horse race dates for 2013. They are: Sam Houston Race Park
(21 days from March 28-May 12), Retama Park (20 days from June 7-Aug. 10), Valle de los Tesoros (6 days from Aug. 16-25), and Lone Star Park (26 days from Sept. 13-Nov. 9). Gillespie County Fair will run an 8-day mixed meet from July 6-Aug. 25. The Commission also approved a deal that allows Las Vegas casino gaming com- pany Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. to purchase 75.5% of Retama Park.
