The dam of War Chant is Hula Girl P by Ed Echols. Hula Girl P, a AA rated runner that became an AQHA Champion, is the dam of 1955 Champion Gelding Arizonian.
Ed Echols was A rated on the racetrack and is the sire of performance horses like 1964 High-Point Tie-Down Calf Roping Horse Echo Reed. Ed Echols is a paternal half-brother to King P-234 and they both were sired by Zantanon by Little Joe.
The dam of Chantella is Bardella, a full sister to Lightning Bar. This gives Doc’s Jack Frost a breeding pattern of 2x2 to these full siblings and also gives the pedigree of Doc’s Jack Frost a breeding pattern of 3x3x3 to Three Bars TB.
Bardella was a year older than Lightning Bar. The 1952 Co-Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and 1953 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, Bardella became the dam of several ROM runners, including Moolah Bar (AAAT), Bardella Too (AAA), Noisella (AAA) and Bar Charge (AA).
Prissy Cline was owned by John Cline when bred to Driftwood Ike, who was
also her sire, making her a paternal half- sister to Orphan Drift. Driftwood Ike, by Driftwood, was a prominent rodeo roping horse and was the 1969 AQHA Reserve High-Point Steer Roping Horse. He also earned 23 AQHA heeling points, 31 AQHA tie-down roping points and had an ROM in performance.
Driftwood has proven to be one of the most influential stallions in modern rodeo. He was first used as a match racehorse
and then he became one of the great rodeo roping horses, used by such rodeo stalwarts as Asbury Schell, Joe Bassett and Buck Nichols. Nichols was the longtime owner of Clabber, who used him as a racehorse and ranch horse. Nichols owned Clabber and Driftwood at the same time, and he sold Driftwood and kept Clabber.
Hancock Belle is the dam of Driftwood Ike. She is by Buck by Chicaro TB, who became a noted source of speed through his progeny. Chicaro is the broodmare sire of AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Top Deck.
Hancock Belle is out of Miss Hancock by Joe Hancock by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. Joe Hancock is best known today as a major source of roping horses, but he was originally a racehorse that was “open to the world.”
Josephine El, the dam of Prissy Cline, was an unraced mare bred by Joe Bassett. She was the dam of just one ROM runner in Crossed Swords. Josephine El is by Super Charge, the AAA rated runner that
competed against Lightning Bar. Super Charge was the 1953 Champion 2-Year- Old Colt. He won two stakes at two in the Baby Stakes and Central Bar And Grill Futurity.
It appears the injury Super Charge incurred competing against Lightning Bar in the California Futurity didn’t stop him, as he continued racing until he was six with 43 starts, 12 wins and earnings of $12,640. He was like Lightning Bar in that he set
a track record at Pomona for 250 yards going in :13.400, and he equaled a track record at Rillito going 330 yards in :17.100. Super Charge is by Depth Charge, a noted Thoroughbred sire that produced World Champion Johnny Dial, the 1952 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse.
Super Charge, who was owned at this point by John Bassett, was out of O’Quinn Midget by King P-234. King P-234 became the great sire of performance Quarter Horses and was a proven roping horse in
his own right. It is a little known fact that King P-234 was raced and won his only two
starts, both at 220 yards, as a young horse. The dam of Josephine El was a AA
rated race mare named Webb’s Demon. Her produce record shows that she is
the dam of nine ROM, including 1969 Gateway Downs Futurity winner Precious Jones, and Chuckline, who was third in the 1967 Southwestern Futurity. Webb’s Demon is the dam of four foals sired by Super Charge, with Saddle Horn earning a racing and performance ROM. He was AAA on the track and earned six halter and five performance points. He was even an NCHA money earner.
Webb’s Demon is by Sonny Chicaro Joe, who is by Chicaro and out of James Sunset by Little Joe. The breeder of Sonny Chicaro Joe was O. W. Cardwell, the last owner of Little Joe by Traveler. Webb’s Demon’s dam is Quarter Queen by Old Poco Bueno by Little Joe. Old Poco Bueno is the sire of Miss Taylor, the dam of Poco Bueno. The dam of Quarter Queen is a mare by Uncle Jimmy Gray TB, a source of speed. Uncle Jimmy Gray is by Bonnie Joe, the sire of Joe Blair,
Stanley Johnston bought Doc’s Jack Frost (below) as a
two year old and bred him to Prissy Cline, producing Sun Frost, Runnin Gun and Quick Draw Cline. These offspring were used as an outcross on Johnston’s Orphan Drift, Poco Speedy and Driftwood mares.
