Johnston’s greatest contribution as a breeder may be the
introduction of Driftwood to his breeding program. Driftwood is one of the most influential stallions in modern rodeo.
the 2014 BFA Juvenile Champion and the 2015 Futurity Horse of the Year; and Ima Super Fly Guy ($127,553), the 2012 Diamonds and Dirt Futurity Champion.
A few years after the death of James Loiseau, Francis went into a partner-
ship with Pat Cowan and the Loiseau Frenchmans mares were bred to Cowan stallions like Sun Frost. This led to the prefix of PC before the names of the foals in this partnership. Casey’s Charm was one of those mares, and in 1995 she foaled PC Frenchmans Hayday by Sun Frost.
PC Frenchmans Hayday was put in
the Cowan sale and Mel Potter bought
the colt. The reason Potter gives for his interest in PC Frenchmans Hayday was
his full brother French Flash Hawk, aka Bozo. Here is the back story: Mel’s daughter Sherry Cervi made her first appearance in the NFR in 1994, the first year Bozo was World Champion. Then in 1995, Sherry
on Jet Royal Speed (aka Hawk) won their first World Championship. Of course, Bozo came back and won three more titles and then in 1999, Sheri and Hawk won their second World Championship. The Reserve World Champion in 1994 and 1999 was, you guessed it, Bozo and Kristie.
Potter realized early on about the great- ness of Bozo and he wanted to bring that bloodline into his program. He paid $65,000 for PC Frenchmans Hayday, a full brother to Bozo, and many thought he was “crazy.” But PC Frenchmans Hayday, aka Dinero as he
is called, earned $400,000 in the arena. He won his money as a barrel racer and a roping horse. His barrel racing wins include the 2008 WBR Finals ID Open Championship. He showed his versatility at the Snake River Stampede in 2005 when he was shown by Sherry in barrels, Walt Woodard in heel-
ing and Corey Petska in heeling. They won $11,000 at this one rodeo. PC Frenchmans Hayday qualified for the NFR as a barrel racer and as a team roping horse. He was the third place PRCA/AQHA Horse of the Year in heeling. The same year, he helped Sheri Cervi finish third in the WNFR average and third in the overall standings for the year.
Dinero has become the sire of winners of over $4 million in barrels, roping and bulldog- ging. His Equi-Stat earnings in barrel racing stand at over $2.5 million. His leading money earner is MP Meter My Hay ($973,902), aka Stingray, who was a part of Sheri Cervi’s 2010 and 2013 PRCA World Champion Barrel Racing Team; 2017 RFD TV American Barrel Racing winner DM Sissy Hayday ($557,065); and LK Shezapeasadinero ($112,065), the 2014 BFA Super Stakes Champion.
Driftwood Ike (above) is the sire of Prissy Cline, the dam of Sun Frost.
1969 AQHA Reserve High-Point Steer Roping Horse Driftwood Ike (above) earned 23 AQHA heeling points, 31 AQHA tie-down points and had an ROM in performance.
