  Decketta Stakes-G3
CANDY CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
Candy Cartel’s winning streak just keeps rolling along.
The 4-year-old mare logged her sixth straight
victory on March 24, beating Chics Delight to the wire by a neck in the Decketta Stakes-G3 at Remington Park. Candy Cartel’s owner/breeder, Carl Pevehouse, banked a $32,160 payday which stands as the highest individual race prize of her career and pushed her lifetime earnings well into six digits at $121,079.
Candy Cartel’s winning streak began last June in an allowance at Fair Meadows, and has included a triumph in the Fort Erie Derby that marked her first stakes vic- tory. The Decketta marks her second stakes win.
The overwhelming favorite at the betting window, Candy Cartel drew the outside starting position of the nine-horse field. She
broke sharply, but Chics Delight grabbed the early lead from the inside. Candy Cartel and Snow Forecast both came on strong from the outside, but Candy Cartel proved best.
The Clinton Crawford trainee covered
the 350 yards in :17.393 and posted a solid 96 speed index. Jockey Tony Bennett was aboard, and has teamed with Crawford for all nine of the trainer’s victories during this year’s meet at
Remington Park. Crawford also trained Fredaville, last year’s winner of the Decketta.
Candy Cartel now holds seven wins in 14 career outs, with all but one of those victories coming during the current streak.
Pevehouse also bred This Candys Special, the dam
of Candy Cartel. She is a multiple stakes winner of more than $100,000 on the track. As a broodmare, she
has foaled eight starters among nine offspring. Two are stakes winners. Jess Special Candy, a half-brother to Candy Cartel, won last year’s All American Congress Maturity.
Chics Delight (Chicks Doit-Easy Hempen Chic) finished second for Dale and Tina Kolb. Dale Kolb also trains the mare, who was ridden by Mike Frederick. Snow Forecast (La Jollaroid- Scarlet Snow), a 23-1 longshot, hit the board in third for owner/trainer Patrick Sanchez. Paul Nieto drew the riding assignment.
Marys Corazon (Azoom-Streakin O Toole), The Dashing Attitude (Streak And Dash-Miss Desert Chrome), Jakes Charming Jody (Jody O Toole-Charming Elan), Dalts Money Maker (First Smart Money-Dalts Pistol), Touch Of Paso (Jumpn-Queen Judea) and Kissin Wave (Wave Carver-Whos Kissin Who) completed the field.
