Ricoh Stakes
SHINEYS MAGIC T
by John Moorehouse
Shineys Magic T made up for last year’s near-miss in the Ricoh Stakes in a big way on March 30
at Sam Houston Race Park. After finishing second in the Ricoh last season, the 6-year-old gelding pre- vailed in this year’s version of the $15,000 stakes. Shineys Magic T finished a close second in
last year’s edition of the Ricoh, then dubbed the
Ikon Stakes, when he slipped at the start and could not recover. No such trouble this time. The Jesse Yoakum trainee broke sharply out of the No. 3 gate, then made a driving finish to reach the wire first by a half-length margin.
Owned by Margaret White, Shineys Magic T posted his first stakes victory and 13th overall win. The gelding has hit the board in two-thirds of his 36 career starts.
The winner’s share of the purse, a sum of $9,000, improved the gelding’s total bankroll to $90,392. Shineys Magic T went off as the overwhelming bet- ting favorite, at 1-2 odds.
Tony Lostracco bred Shineys Magic T out of Oh My Shesa Dream, a 1997 mare he also bred. The lightly-raced mare has produced three offspring, but Shineys Magic T is the only starter in the brood.
His A Tycoon Cowboy (Special Red Warrior- Streakin Splash) took second for owners J.B. and Sherrie Morace. Angel Sanchez trains the 4-year-old gelding, who had J.R. Ramirez in the irons. His A Tycoon Cowboy was previously third in the Icon Stakes last year.
La Esterlina (Shazoom-Secret Terms) made
a huge move on the outside late to finish third, earning her first piece of black type. Silvia Robles is the owner and Abel Morin the trainer. Jockey Luis Vivanco drew the riding assignment.
JC My Diamond Man (Streakin La Jolla-Chicks A Diamond) and Windys Magic Six (Windys Magic Runner-One Eyed Six) completed the field.
Silestone Stakes
HOT TICKIN
by Tracy Gantz
Owner Felipe Barron made an astute claim when he haltered Hot Tickin for $5,000 out of a race at Delta Downs last June. Not only did he
get a granddaughter of a champion, Hot Tickin has developed into a stakes winner, as she captured the March 24 Silestone Stakes at Sam Houston.
Hot Tickin motored to the front under jockey David Alvarez when the gate opened in the 330-yard Silestone for 3-year-old fillies. I B Zooming edged forward on the rail and raced with her for a few strides before Hot Tickin pulled away. Pink Cartel rushed up, but could not catch Hot Tickin, who won by a head in :16.583.
Jeff Acuna trains Hot Tickin for Barron. The filly raced for her breeder, Roger Knight Jr., until the claim, winning one of four starts. She captured an allowance race the first time in Barron’s colors.
Knight bred Hot Tickin in Texas from Tickin Away. Hot Tickin is the mare’s first starter. The second dam, Your First Moon, was the 2001 champion 2-year- old and 2-year-old filly, winning the Los Alamitos Million Futurity-G1 and Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG1 en route to earnings of $750,726. Your First Moon has also produced graded stakes winner Jess My Moon.
Bullard Farms’ homebred Pink Cartel (Jet Cartel-Shades Of Pink-TB) won the 2011 Dash For Cash Juvenile. Alfonso Lujan rode her in the Silestone for trainer Lewis Jordan.
BZ Amazin Grace (Tinys First Corona-Easy Dash Miss) finished third under Jose Alvarez. Manuel Flores trains the filly, a two-time winner in three prior starts, for owner Shirley Flores.
Completing the field were Massima (Tres Seis-Kitty First), I B Zooming (Azoom-Regardez Moi), BS Let Freedom Run (Prime Talent-Jodys Lil Train), Special Awards (Winning Awards-Special Ignition), Eyesa Royality (Royal Shake Em-Eyesa Jumpn), and School Girl Fantasy (Separatist-JJH Playin For Keeps).

BF FARM GIRL
by Tracy Gantz
With BF Farm Girl’s credentials, it wasn’t so much “if” she would become a stakes winner, but rather “when.” She emphatically answered that question in the March 25 James S. Smith Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Despite some minor bumping at the start of the 350-yard Smith, BF Farm Girl quickly took the lead. She vied with Hezaregal Charmer and then drew away to defeat Tac It To Heart by three-quarters of a length as the 2-1 favorite in :17.785. Checkedbound came on from the outside to make it close for second, losing the place by a head.
Saul Ramirez Jr. rode BF Farm Girl for Paul Jones, the all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer. The 3-year-old filly broke her maiden in her racing debut and won an allowance event last November. Trouble in her two stakes attempts kept BF Farm Girl from becoming a stakes winner prior to the Smith.
Owners Donald and Peggy Boyle bred BF Farm Girl in Oregon from their prolific producer Shirleys Strawfly. BF Farm Girl is the fifth stakes winner and 10th winner out of 11 starters for the mare. Champion Strawkins, a multiple Grade 1 winner,
is her biggest earner, with $613,406, while Summit Bid, Mr Eye Will, and Raining Fresh Daisys have also won stakes.
Sparton 300’s Tac It To Heart (Tac It Like A Man- Let’s Eat Lunch-TB) captured two of her three 2012 starts prior to finishing second in the Smith. Eulices Gomez regularly pilots her for trainer Tom Bazley.
Rodrigo Aceves rode third-placed Checkedbound (Snowbound-TB-Checkedchic) for trainer Jose Flores. Hector Hernandez owns the gelding.
Rounding out the field were Hezaregal Charmer (A Regal Choice-Sheza Heart Charmer), Larana 09 (Senior Solo-Itsnosecretanymore), Tres Of Linda (Tres Seis-Lindas Dasher), and Running Out (Check Him Out-Running Bac).
