Rukin Jelks Stakes
MOMONEYMOPROBLEMS
by John Moorehouse
How did Mo Money Mo Problems respond after posting the fastest qualifying time in trials for the Rukin Jelks Stakes? By surpassing it.
After clocking a :17.430 in qualifying, Mo Money Mo Problems came out and ran a :17.388 in the $18,500 stakes final to claim his second straight win and first stakes win. Mo Money Mo Problems now has three wins in seven career starts for owner/ trainer Omar Lorta, and the $10,360 first-place share of the purse improved his total earnings to $23,896, nearly doubling his previous total.
Mo Money Mo Problems went wire-to-wire in this one, bursting out of the No. 7 gate to grab the early lead and pulling away during the final 100 yards to finish with a strong three-quarter-length margin of victory. Jockey Porfirio Cano rode.
Lorta’s 3-year-old gelding already had black type, placing second in last year’s Arizona QRA Futurity.
Marilou Kelly bred Mo Money Mo Problems out of Nola Darling, a 1998 mare. Nola Darling is stakes-placed, and has produced six starters among seven offspring. Five of those six are winners, and Mo Money Mo Problems becomes the second stakes winner, joining his half-brother, Lifes Been Good, who won the 2010 Arizona QRA Futurity.
Hawks Three Chicks (Hawkinson-Luci O Toole) made a solid run for second place. Cruz Velazquez owns the mare, an Armando Castellanos trainee ridden by Rodolfo Arvizu. David Reyes-Frisby rode A Real Dasher (Dashin Chico-A Real Alibi) to third place by a neck for owner Alma Ramos and trainer Pedro Gomez.
Jess Creek Manor (Feature Mr Jess-Queen
Creek Queen), A Blazin Dash (Chicks A Blazin-This Ones For Dash), JRM Scootermegone (Heza Motor Scooter-Caits Dash), BV Fly First Class (Fly Jess Fly- Eyesa First) and Fly Jess For Perks (Fly Jess Fly-All Night Perks) completed the field.
Hasta La Vista Stakes, Div. 1
SEPARATE DASHER
by John Moorehouse
Heading into the 2012 campaign, Separate Dasher had made 13 total outs with only one trip to the winner’s circle. Thus far this season, the
7-year-old gelding definitely is making up for lost time. Separate Dasher improved to 2-0 in 2012 with a first-place run in Division 1 of the Hasta La Vista Stakes, held March 24 at Rillito.
The victory, Separate Dasher’s first in stakes company, was well-timed. The $18,000 purse for the Hasta La Vista was winner-take-all, and by securing the prize, Separate Dasher more than tripled his lifetime earnings to a new total of $26,935.
The gelding is owned by the partnership of F. Camacho, and S. and R. Gastalon, trained by Ceasar Lopez, and had jockey David Reyes-Frisby in the irons.
Separarate Dasher led at every call, breaking sharply from the outside hole in a seven-horse field and beating Fly Corona Cat to the wire by a neck in :11.675 for a new 220-yard track record, surpassing the old mark of :11.720 set by Jesstifiable on Feb. 21, 2010.
Martha Wells bred Separate Dasher, who becomes the first stakes winner out of his dam, Im Willie Kool. The mare has produced eight foals with six of those making starts. Willie Dasher, a full- brother to Separate Dasher, was second in last year’s Wild West Futurity at Los Alamitos.
Fly Corona Cat (Corona Cartel-Flying Nanny) finished second for his owners at Y/N Horse Stables LLC. The Omar Lorta trainee had jockey Porfirio Cano in the irons. Buck El Up (Buccaneer Beach- Beat Up) hit the board in third. Dennis Marsteller does double duty as owner and trainer for the geld- ing, and Rick Oliver drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was Eyes Open A Little (Mr Eye Opener-A Little Ingenuity), Fontes Revenge (Count Corona-Total Duina), Rollmedacash (Mr Corona Cash-Heads R Gonna Roll) and Fishers Flash (Fishers Dash-Sign Of Class).
Hasta La Vista Stakes, Div. 2
LIL LICKITEE SPIT
by John Moorehouse
Two of the progeny of Separatist engaged in their own version of one-upsmanship during the two divisions of the Hasta La Vista Stakes held March 25 at Rillito. First, Separate Dasher charged to victory in the winner-take-all Division 1 stakes, posting a career-best 106 speed index and new track record in the process. Then Lil Lickitee Spit, another veteran gelding sired by Separatist, topped that performance by breaking the 220-yard track record to win the $20,500 Division 2 stakes event by daylight.
Prepped by owner Jose Botello, Lil Lickitee Spit completed the distance in :11.568. It also marked the first stakes victory and fourth win in 18 total outs for Lil Lickitee Spit, who improved his total bankroll to $52,193 with the addition of this all-or-nothing $20,500 purse.
Jockey Luis Gutierrez was aboard as Lil Lickitee Spit broke from the No. 6 hole and rolled to the finish line to post a 1 1/4-length victory. By doing so, Lil Lickitee Spit joined his dam, Lil Spit Curl, as a stakes winner. The Mitchell Ranch, which co-bred Lil Lickitee Spit with the Burnett Ranch, owns Lil Spit Curl.
Easy Chiseled Stone reached the wire second but was disqualified to fourth. That elevated Frankyg into the runner-up spot and allowed pre-race favorite Eyeameasy to hit the board third. Israel Garcia owns Frankyg (Make It Anywhere-Sundowner Sixes), an Armando Castellanos trainee who had jockey Emilio Tapia aboard. Eyeameasy (Eye Yin You-Easin On In) is owned by Norma Reyes and trained by Charles Acosta. Jockey David Reyes-Frisby did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was Easy Chiseled Stone (SC Chiseled In Stone-Easy Hempen Chic), Vivid Lady (Vivid Velocity-Lady Of Lake TB), Snowstorm Regard (Chicks Regard-Gambeleta Caine), Main Event (Especially Rare-Margaritas Dash) and Ive Done Did It (Corona Cartel-See Me Do It).
