Sawgrass Stakes
JOLTIN JESS
by Michael Compton
Heavily-favored Joltin Jess did not disappoint in the Sawgrass Stakes at Hialeah Park. In winning his second stakes race of the meet, Joltin Jess and jockey
Shanley Jackson simply toyed with eight rivals in the 440-yard fixture on Feb. 3, leading virtually wire to wire to score by 1 3/4-lengths. Joltin Jess covered the distance in :21.417 and earned a speed index of 98.
“He’s turned into an excellent horse,” said winning trainer Matt Frazier. “He’s got a big closing kick. If he gets away like he did today, 440 [yards] is his lick.”
Joltin Jess, bred in Oklahoma by Circle S Ranch Inc., races in the colors of Glenn Graff. The 5-year- old sorrel gelding has enjoyed an outstanding Hialeah meet, also annexing the Orange Blossom Stakes
on Dec. 23 and finishing third, beaten less than a length, in the City of Hialeah Stakes on Jan. 20.
Now a winner in five of 14 lifetime starts with
a bankroll of $133,174, Joltin Jess is produced from the graded stakes-placed mare Jettin Home, by Pine’s Easter Jet. In addition to Joltin Jess, Jettin Home
is also the dam of multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed Rarely Home and five additional winners.
16-1 longshot Executive Prince and Rodrigo Vallejo chased Joltin Jess across the line for second. Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky N Picky) is owned by Bennie and E. Teresa Jeter and is trained by Judd Kearl. Eyeowa Cyclone (Mr Eye Opener- Countess Rare Bar) nabbed third under Agustin Silva. Owned and trained by Charlton Hunt, Eyeowa Cyclone has now hit the board in nine of 11 lifetime tries at Hialeah.
The remaining order was Mr Commando (Feature Mr Jess-Unloved), Mixed Fantasy (Okey Dokey Fantasy-Mixin Sixin), Jess Cashin In (Mr
Jess Perry-Feed Down First), I Am That Hero (Sweet First Down-Miss Fine La Jolla), Legendary Express (Ocean Runaway-Metered Express) and Takin Quick Cash, (Quick to Flare Up-Takin Away the Cash).
Moonstone Stakes
DOYLES DASHING STAR
by Michael Compton
Doyles Dashing Star’s affinity for the surface
at Hialeah Park helped her overcome a slow start and traffic trouble to emerge victorious in the
$22,250 Moonstone Stakes at Hialeah Park on Feb. 3. The 6-5 wagering favorite, Doyles Dashing Star
broke last under Omar Reyes in the seven-horse field. Once Doyles Dashing Star had her feet underneath her, Reyes maneuvered her to the rail for clear sailing when he lacked room between runners. It proved to be the only help Doyles Dashing Star needed. Once clear, the mare burst clear of the field and crossed
the wire 1 1/4-lengths in front to stop the timer in :32.476 for the 660 yards and a speed index of 96.
“I was very worried,” trainer Gene Stephens said in the winner’s circle. “I didn’t think she could do it.”
The Moonstone was the fourth start of the meet for Doyles Dashing Star and second career stakes score. She finished second in both the Orange Blossom Stakes and Crystal River Stakes and captured an allowance event in between those stakes starts at the current stand. Her other stakes win came in the Virgil Bond 870 Stakes at Delta Downs last year.
Racing for Rachel Stephens (Lessee), Doyles Dashing Star was bred in Georgia by Barry McDonald. Doyles Dashing Star is out of the win- ning Groovy-TB mare Georgia Wildcat, a two-time winner on the track and the dam of additional win- ners Doyles Dasher and Wildcat Bill.
Robert Gentry homebred Airizon (Tale of the Cat-TB-Fearless Chick) secured second under Shanley Jackson for trainer Matt Frazier. Call Me Sundown (Call Me Together-Sundown Lucy) was third under Osdany Leal for owner Lazaro Gonzalez and trainer Darlon Mesa.
Completing the order of finish were TRS Hotshot Adam (Hotshot Dash-Maydecks Request), Cody O Toole (Jody O Toole-Junomore), Sassy Suzze (My Designated Driver-Suzee Cash) and Im Capt Morgan (Special Leader-First Lady Kate).
Swift Stakes
SPARROW CONTENDER
by John Moorehouse
Sparrow Contender’s owner Israel Soliz, Jr. may need to change his colt’s name at this rate. Sparrow Contender hasn’t just been in the running in his first two outs of 2013; he’s been the winner of each, most recently nosing out Dash For Cache in the $15,000 Swift Stakes on Feb. 2 at Louisiana Downs. It marked the fifth win in 14 total outs for Sparrow Contender, who opened his sophomore campaign with back-to-back stakes victories. The Fructuoso Huitron trainee earned black type in the Harrah’s Dash Stakes on Jan. 12 at Louisiana Downs. Sparrow Contender has won three straight starts dating back to his final out of 2012 - a 220-yard allowance at Lone Star.
A steady run under jockey Martin Rubalcava pro- pelled Sparrow Contender to victory this time. The colt broke strong from the 6-hole, and was in front by a head at the first call. Sparrow Contender maintained that lead entering the stretch, withstanding a driving finish by Dash For Cache to win the $9,000 payday. The stakes victory improved the colt’s total bankroll to $42,744.
Irma Trevino bred Sparrow Contender out of Taint Special, a stakes-placed 1996 mare whom Trevino also owns. Taint Special was third in the 1998 Gillespie County Texas Bred Futurity. Sparrow Contender is the only foal out of Taint Special who holds a stakes vic- tory, although half-sister Okey Dokey Taint qualified to the 2006 Texas Distaff Challenge-G3.
In second was Dash For Cache (Hiclass La Jolla-Stolis Wild Fling) for owner Jose Garza, trainer Joseph Vacca, and jockey David Alvarez. In third was Taylors Toastin Papa (Toast To Dash-Tacha La Jolla) for owner Gerald Libersat, trainer Kevin Broussard and jockey Donald Watson.
The remaining order was Charal Kid (Streakin La Jolla-The Special Feature), Watah Success (Cartel Success- Lotawatah), Feedingmygator (Pritzi Dash-Lizas Mystique), Jo Jos Rocket (The Chocolate Rocket-Miz Proudest Chic) and Martini Mountain (Panther Mountain-Glitz Gator). aystretcher and Rumbulling Knight both scratched.
