NM Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R)
Bryn’s Fancy Pants unleashed a strong stretch rally to win the Nov. 4, 6 furlong New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship at Zia Park.
Ridden by Roimes Chirinos, Bryn’s Fancy Pants closed off of the :21.59 and :43.85 frac- tions set by pacesetter Waltzing Attila, arriving at the wire in 1:09.20 and defeating Orogrande by 1 1/4 lengths. Todd Fincher prepped the chestnut mare for owners Dale F. Taylor Racing LLC, Carey Taylor, and Jon Hogg.
Bryn’s Fancy Pants was bred by Dale Taylor and Debbie Taylor, and is one of five stakes winners from 89 starters sired by Southwestern Heat. A stakes-winning and Grade 3-placed son of Gone West and 2001 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Xtra Heat, Southwestern Heat raced from 2006-08 and earned $155,340 from 17 starts.
Southwestern Heat has sired the earners of more than $2.9 million from five crops, topped by 2015 Dine Stakes (R) winner Gator Heat. He was the third-leading sire by earnings in New Mexico in 2016. The stallion died due to colic in Feb. ’17.
Bryn’s Fancy Pants is one of two winners from as many starters produced by Fan’s Cat, a daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Devon Lane who won the 2011 Lincoln Handicap (R) at
Ruidoso Downs.
Bryn’s Fancy Pants’ second dam, the win-
ning Geiger County mare Little Fan, foaled two other stakes winners, both of whom
are half brothers to Fan’s Cat: Geiger Gold,
the winner of the ’04 Totah Futurity (R) at SunRay Park, and Moody Slew, a 3-time stakes winner at Turf Paradise from 2002-03.
Bryn’s Fancy Pants traces back to her fourth dam, the stakes-winning Laser Light (GB) mare Lucinda Light (IRE) who produced Granacus, the winner of the ’88 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Bryn’s Fancy Pants has won nine of 20 starts, and
the $84,000 winner’s share of the $140,000 Sprint Distaff Championship purse increased the mare’s earnings to $390,711. She has won five stakes, including three during a sophomore campaign in which she earned $138,100 from five outs.
Waltzing Attila held on for third, two lengths behind Bryn’s Fancy Pants, and was followed by Woodacouldadid, Mike And Trixie, A Kiss For Mom, I’m A Dancin Who, Tijuana, Westa, Ivy Gimlet, and Sidewinder Sally.
Runner-up Orogrande races for W.D. Carson Sr., M.H. Carson, and Leach Racing
Inc., a partnership which also bred the 3-year- old daughter of the Carson City stallion Quinton’s Gold. A full sister to 4-time stakes winner Lady Genius and a half to multiple stakes winners Mr. Wizard, Beau Wizer, and Double Smart, the chestnut filly has won two of 13 starts and has earned $114,859.
Waltzing Attila is a homebred 4-year-old Attila’s Storm filly owned by Wesley and Glenda Gray. Waltzing Attila has pocketed $229,853 from 15 races, and her record includes victories in the 2016 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs and last year’s Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
