ROLL ON MATILDA
Raymond L. Gilder’s Roll On Matilda, a chestnut daughter of Roll Hennessy Roll, took the lead at the head of the stretch and went on to win the Nov. 4, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Ridden by Roimes Chirinos and sent to post as the 3-2 second choice, Roll On Matilda covered 6 furlongs in 1:09.38 while defeating 11-10 favorite African Heat by a clear 5 3/4 lengths. Todd Fincher prepped the filly, who was winning for the third time in five outs and posting her first stakes victory.
Roll On Matilda made her Zia Park debut with a wire-to-wire, seven-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $36,000 first-level allowance for juvenile fillies on Oct.9. The filly was bred by Fred Alexander and Todd Fincher, and she was a $55,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
Roll On Matilda became the 11th stakes winner from 144 starters sired by Roll Hennessy Roll, an 18-year-old son of the Storm Cat stallion Hennessy. Raced in five states, including New Mexico, from 2002-04, Roll Hennessy Roll banked $173,869 from 12 starts, and his four wins included a 4-length victory in the ’02 Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) at Hollywood Park, and that season’s
Los Ninos Stakes and Ruidoso Thoroughbred Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.
Roll Hennessy Roll has sired the earners of more than $6.5 million from 11 crops, includ- ing multiple stakes winners Kiss My Hennessy, Back Seat Roll, and Twixy Roll. A half/full brother to Grade 3 winner Sing Baby Sing and stakes winner and 2004 Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Value Plus, the stallion is owned by Fred Alexander and Brad King, and he stands for a $2,500 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Roll On Matilda is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Pay Back Time, an unraced daughter by Songandaprayer and
a 1/2-sister to three stakes placed runners, including Collection Plate, the runner-up
in the ’09 Aspen Cup Handicap at Ruidoso Downs. The filly’s second dam, the Montreal Marty mare Paga (ARG), won five stakes
from 2000-012, including the 2001 Monrovia Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita Park.
The $84,000 winner’s share of the purse increased Roll On Matilda’s earnings to $138,836. Her resume includes a second-place finish, 2-lengths behind winner African Heat, in the 5 1/2-furlong, $135,000 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs on Sept. 2.
Julie Who finished third and was followed by Shug’s Best, Let It Roll, McWend, Secret Dreamer, Feisty Halo, Sofia’s Gift, Indian Diva, My Country Girl and Tonni Gwen.
Runner-up African Heat is a homebred daughter of Southwestern Heat campaigned by J. Kirk Robison of El Paso, Texas. The filly has won two of three starts, including the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R), and has earned $100,889.
A homebred Quinton’s Gold filly owned by Sam E. Stevens and Sammy L. Stevens of Lamesa, Texas, Julie Who has won two of six starts, and the $14,000 third-place share of the Lassie Championship purse pushed her bank- roll to $34,846.
