Israel Bordier’s Major Bites successfully defended his championship in the November 4, 440-yard Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup QH Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.
Ridden by Jose Alvarez, Major Bites covered his 1/4-mile trip in :21.594, and his win-
ning margin was a clear 1 1/2 lengths from Mamacita Cartel. Jesus Carrete saddled the 5-year-old bay son of Jesse James Jr, who was earning his fourth stakes victory of the year.
Major Bites was facing New Mexico-bred stakes company off of his second-place finish, a 1/2-length behind reigning 2-time World Champion Jessies First Down, in the 440-yard, $300,000 Albuquerque Fall Champ. (G1) at Albuquerque Downs on Sept. 23. The gelding was bred by Carlos Paez, and is out of Dyna Mo Rime, a winning daughter of Major Rime.
Major Bites’ sire, Jesse James Jr, earned $167,275 while racing in New Mexico and California, and his five wins in 21 outs included a wire-to-wire, 3/4-length score in the 2005 First Down Dash Handicap at Los Alamitos.
A 2001 foal and a full brother to Grade 1 winner Jesstified, Mr Jess Perry has sired the earners of more than $15.8 million from eight crops, including 2015 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Astica, multiple graded stakes winners
Osbaldo and Princess Jesse, and graded stakes winners Percyjones and Play Misty Foreme. The stallion died after a battle with laminitis on Aug. 24, 2017; however, he can be bred to via frozen semen at MJ Farms.
Major Bites’ third dam, the Master Hand (TB) stallion Western Hand (TB), won the ’79 Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park. His fourth dam, the unraced Penny Two (TB), is a 1/2-sister to Highland Blade, who won six stakes in four states from 1988-91, including the ’90 Gallorette Handicap (G3) at Pimlico Racecourse.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Major Bites has won nine of 25 races, and
his five career stakes wins include a wire- to-wire, 1/2-length victory in last year’s Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Champ. (RG1). The gelding has won four of his seven starts at the 440-yard distance, including
the $70,000 First Moonflash Maturity (R) at Albuquerque Downs on Aug. 26, and the $85,000 Dona Ana County Stakes (R) at Sunland Park on Jan. 28.
Percyjones finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Major Bites. Magnifico Dragon, Play Misty Foreme, A Passion For Flashn, Marcus Medallion, You Can Do It Regard, Cartels Star Daddy, and Gon In A Flash completed the
order of finish.Runner-up Mamacita Cartel is
a homebred 4-year-old daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Big Daddy Cartel campaigned by David Bloomer. The mare has won five of 15 outs and has earned $160,897, of which $130,780 has been banked this season, and her two stakes wins include a neck victory in the 400-yard, $39,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) at SunRay Park in May.
Percyjones races for Terry and Irene Stennett who acquired the sorrel gelding as a yearling for $35,000 at the 2015 New Mexico-Bred Sale. Raced in New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, Percyjones has won seven of 14 starts, including last year’s $176,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs, and has earned $329,103.
