                                 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2)
Enrique Barrera’s Woodys Copy Cat scored her first stakes victory in the Nov. 4, $315,450 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) for state- bred 2 year old Quarter Horses at Zia Park.
Ridden by Manuel Gutierrez for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez, Woodys Copy Cat covered 400 yards in :19.687 while racing against a reported 15-mph head wind, and her winning margin was a neck from HS Paul Walker. The filly earned a 94 speed index and banked the $151,416 winner’s share of the purse.
Woodys Copy Cat was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and the filly was a $4,700 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The filly’s sire, Woodbridge, is an unraced 19-year-old son of the First Down Dash stallion Dash Ta Fame.
A full brother to Grade 1 winner and one- time 440-yard World-Record holder Kendall Jackson and stakes winner Wilmon, and a half to three stakes winners, including 2009 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Alice K White, Woodbridge has sired the earners of more than $3.2 million from 11 crops, including multiple graded stakes win- ner Carson City Girl and graded stakes winners Woodys Allstar and Woody Dungarees.
Woodbridge is owned by MJ Farms and stands for a $2,500 fee at MJ Farms.
Woodys Copy Cat’s dam, Fast Copy Miss, is a winning and multiple graded stakes placed daughter of 1994 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Heza Fast Man. Her second dam, Miss Bully Bach produced two stakes winners: Faster Than Lightnin, a full brother to Fast Copy Miss who won the ’02 AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity (G3), and Anywhere Bully, a multiple graded stakes winning 1/2-brother to Fast Copy Miss.
Woodys Copy Cat’s third dam, the unplaced R. Smith (TB) mare A Special Smith, foaled two stakes winners, topped by multiple Grade
1 winner Sassy Smith, the dam of Champions Jess Walking Thru and Sass Me Blue.
The second-fastest qualifier, Woodys Copy Cat was coming off of a 1/2-length victory in one of 7 New Mexico Cup Futurity trials on Oct. 13. All told, the filly has won three of 7 starts and has earned $240,728, and her record includes a 2nd place finish, a neck behind win- ner Zee James, in the, $396,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park on April 7. She also was a finalist in the July 1, $97,000 Four Corners Futurity at Albuquerque Downs.
Wood Be A Superstar ran third, 1/2-length behind runner-up HS Paul Walker. Zee James, Flo Jos Mojo, fastest qualifier Tooflashyforyou,
U Got The Look, Saul, Easy Over The Moon, and Igotmybiggirljeanson.
HS Paul Walker races for Fernando Solis Grajeda. A finalist in the New Mexican Spring Futurity, the gelding has won three of 9 starts, and the $50,472 runner-up share of the New Mexico Cup Futurity Purse pushed his bankroll to $93,960. Wood Be A Superstar is owned by Aldai Transport, which purchased the sorrel son of Woodbridge for $33,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. Wood Be A Superstar has won two of 7 outs and has earned $48,269, and his resume includes a 2nd place finish, in the $50,000 By By JJ Stakes (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs on July 28.
