Clara Moore Thomas’ Roll On Diabolical, the 19-10 favorite in the field of 11, led at every call en route to the colt’s first stakes victory
in the New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs on Sept. 23.
Ridden by Alejandro Medellin for trainer Tom Pierce Jr., Roll On Diabolical stopped the timer in 1:10.59, and his winning margin was 4 1/4 lengths from 11-10 favorite No Pasa Nada. The colt earned his second win in three outs and the $88,830 winner’s share of the $177,659 purse.
Roll On Diabolical was an $11,500 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. The colt became the 11th stakes winner sired by Diabolical, a 15-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Artax. Racing on three continents from 2005-09, Diabolical earned $1,404,772 from 31 starts, and his nine wins included the 6-furlong, $260,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga, and Maryland Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) at Pimlico Racecourse, both in 2007.
Diabolical has sired the earners of more than $7.1 million from six crops, including multiple stakes winners Diabolical Dame and That’s The Idea. The stallion is owned by Fred Alexander and J. Kirk Robison, and he stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Roll On Diabolical is also the first starter produced by Hennesey Smash, a New Mexico- bred daughter of Roll Hennessy Roll who
won four stakes from 2012-13, topped by the 6-furlong, $140,600 New Mexico Cup Fillies Championship (R) at Zia Park during her 3-year-old season. The colt’s second dam, the unraced Rare Brick mare Some Smash foaled four other stakes winners, all of whom are half siblings to Hennessy Smash, including 9-time stakes winner Star Smasher and Some Ghost,
a 7-time stakes winner who won the Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R) at Sunland Park three consecutive years from 2006-08.
Roll On Diabolical traces back to his third dam, A Smash, a daughter of Star de Naskra who won stakes at Sunland Park and Albuquerque in ’85. The colt was bred by Barbara M. Coleman, Brad King, and Todd Fincher, and he has banked $100,650.
“He was a little unruly when we first got him,” said Pierce. “He had to be taught every- thing, and he loved to rear up and strike out. But little by little, he’s gotten a lot better. If you look at his pedigree, he has a license to be a really nice horse down the road.”
Pierce indicated that Roll On Diabolical would be pointed to the Nov. 4, $140,000 New
Mexico Cup Juvenile Champ. (R) at Zia Park. Send The Storm finished third, and was fol-
lowed by Biscuit Snatcher, Santita S S, Sofia’s Gift, Sea Ole’ Go, The Whups, Russian Rye, Snow In The North, and Lil Latigo.
No Pasa Nada has won one of four starts for his owners, Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey. The homebred Attila’s Storm gelding banked the $35,532 runner-up share of the purse to bring his earnings to $52,277. Send The Storm races for Nancy Summers and Curt G. Arnett. A bay son of Attila’s Storm and a $4,000 purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, the gelding has banked $21,713 from two starts.
