REGARD THE ROSE
Alfredo Triana Jr. rode fourth-fastest qualifier Regard The Rose to a neck victory in the Sept. 23, $134,387 New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Derby (R) at Albuquerque Downs.
Prepped by Alfredo Triana Sr. for owner Mason A. King, Regard The Rose went 400 yards in :19.734. The $67,194 winner’s share of the purse from her second career stakes win increased the filly’s bankroll to $135,461.
“The way she broke, I was confident that she’d run a good race, and she did,” said Triana Jr. “She drifted out a little bit, but other than that she was pretty much clear and ran a good race.”
Regard The Rose was bred by the Deming, New Mexico-based Coronas Black Diamond Partnership, and was acquired by King for $6,000 at the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. Her sire, Chicks Regard, stakes-winning son of Chicks Beduino who won six of 13 races and earned $52,783 from 2001-03.
Chicks Regard has sired the earners of more than $6.6 million from 12 crops, including multiple graded stakes winners A Streak Regard and Ms Regard. The stallion is owned by KH Logax Inc., at Robert and Del Rae Driggers’ Bar Y Equine at Berino, New Mexico.
Regard The Rose’s dam, Not Sable Shes Rose, is an unraced 8-year-old daughter of the
Count Corona stallion Coronas Blackdiamond. The filly traces back to her fourth dam, Black Sable, a daughter of Oldie (TB) and the sport’s Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 1979.
Regard The Rose began her career with
a flourish, as she won five of her first six
starts, including a 300-yard maiden claiming ($20,000) dash at Remington Park in her debut, and the 400-yard, $30,000 Arapahoe Park Futurity. However, a string of four off-the-board finishes began with her eighth-place finish in the Jan. 14 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.
“I’m not sure what happened to her early in the year, but I talked to the owner after the Sunland meet, and we agreed to give her some time off,” said Triana Sr. “We turned her out for 45 days and brought her back into training at Ruidoso in June.”
Raced in three states, Regard The Rose has won seven of 12 starts.
Hollywoodcrown, the 2-1 favorite in the full field of 10, finished second and was fol- lowed by Flash Moonfire, My Regards To You, Insurmountable BB, fastest qualifier Jessa Diva, Jenna Cartel, Scooters Crown Jewel, Masons Moon, Sixes Are Special.
A homebred daughter of Heza Motor Scooter owned by Fred Danley of Anthony,
New Mexico, Hollywoodcrown has won four of 15 outs, and the $26,877 runner-up share of the New Mexico State Fair Derby purse pushed the brown filly’s bankroll to $123,725. Her resume includes a third-place finish, 3/4-length behind winner A Passion For Flashn, in last year’s 400-yard, $300,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.
Flash Moonfire races for David Valdez
who acquired the First Moonflash gelding for $27,000 at the 2016 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. He has won two of eight races and has earned $121,190, and he finished second, 1/2-length behind winner Daddys Blushing, in last year’s Mountain Top Futurity (RG3).
