 Jesse Lane, a homebred sorrel son of Jesse James Jr, extended his win streak to three races in the Nov. 4, $202,547 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.
Ridden by Alonso Rivera and facing a reported 16-mph head wind, Jesse Lane went 440 yards in :21.734 while posting a 96 speed index. Jimmy Padgett saddled the gelding for owner Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms.
Jesse Lane was coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in one of 3 New Mexico Cup Derby trials on Oct. 14. The gelding’s sire, the Mr Jess Perry stallion Jesse James Jr, earned $167,275 while racing in New Mexico and California from 2003-06, and his 5 wins in 21 outs included the ’05 First Down Dash Handicap at Los Alamitos.
A 2001 foal and a full brother to Grade 1 win- ner Jesstified, Jesse James Jr was the runner-up in Not For Long’s 2004 Golden State Derby (G1). He has sired the earners of more than $15.8 mil- lion from eight crops, including 2015 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Astica, multiple graded stakes winners Osbaldo and Princess Jesse, and graded stakes winners Percyjones and Play Misty Foreme.
Jesse James Jr died after a battle with lamini- tis on August 24, 2017; however, he can be bred to via frozen semen for a $3,000 fee at MJ Farms.
Jesse Lane is out of Champagne Lane, a homebred daughter of the Leinster House (TB) stallion Lanes Leinster and winner of 3 graded stakes from 1996-97, including the 1997 La Primera del Ano Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos. The gelding is 1/2-brother to 3 graded stakes winners, including ’09 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Alice K White and Grade 1 winner and 440-yard World Record holder Kendall Jackson. Jesse Lane’s second dam, the homebred Streakin Dash mare Dashin Sandy, won the 1992 Diamond Classic Futurity (RG1) at Casper, Wyoming. His 3rd dam, the Zevi (TB) mare Synchrocept, was a multiple stakes win- ner in the Intermountain region in 1980.
An earner of $297,496 from 11 starts, all
in New Mexico, Jesse Lane has won 5 races, including last year’s 440-yard, $200,000 All American Juvenile Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs. His resume includes a 2nd place finish, 3/4-length behind winner Bigg Daddy, in last year’s 400-yard, $371,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-breds at Ruidoso.
Jesse Lane was sent to post as the 19-10 favorite in the field of nine and returned a $5.80 win mutuel. Hollywoodcrown, the 5-2 second choice, finished 2nd to complete a $2 exacta payoff of $16.
Ginuwine Buzz, Rime Chimes, Miles Of Flash, Regard The Rose, Avallon, Flashy Tres, and fastest qualifier Siximoons completed the order of finish. Nolans Theory was scratched.
Hollywoodcrown is a homebred multiple graded stakes placed Heza Motor Scooter filly campaigned by Fred Danley. Hollywoodcrown has won five of 17 starts, and the $32,408 runner-up share of the New Mexico Cup Derby purse increased her bankroll to $160,933.
Ginuwine Buzz is owned by Pedro Carrillo. A $10,000 claimer during the Albuquerque Downs summer meet, the filly has won 3 of 15 outs and has earned $73,518, of which $64,423 has been pocketed from nine races this year.
