Konnan Cartel, a gelded son of Five Bar Cartel racing for Dania Castellanos and the fastest qualifier, scored the victory in
the $144,635 Delta Downs Derby-RG3 for Louisiana-breds on July 15.
Racing against a reported 5-mph head wind, Konnan Cartel went 400 yards in :19.848, and his winning margin was 1 1/4-lengths from Moonin Rusty. Victor Urieta Jr. rode the gelding for trainer Josue Ponce.
Konnan Cartel was winning for the third time in three starts this season.
“We got him at the beginning of the year,” said Ponce. “We knew that he was fast as a 2 year old, but he was small. He’s really matured this year, and he has a lot of heart.
“He’s one of the few horses I train who does everything right,” he added.

COOL YA JETS

Making just her second start of the season, Pete Scarmardo’s Cool Ya Jets won the inaugural $145,062 Delta Downs
Oaks for Louisiana-bred 3-year-old fillies on July 15.
Cool Ya Jets covered 400 yards in :20.012, and her margin of victory was 1-length from San Lorenzo Moon. Ubaldo Luna rode the Jet Black Patriot filly for trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr.
The third-fastest qualifier, Cool Ya Jets made her season debut with a three-quarter length victory in the third of three trials on June 21.
The filly was bred by Bayou Stirling Equine LLC of New Roads, Louisiana, and she is out of MCM
On Thin Ice, a winning and stakes-placed daughter of Heza Fast Dash. Cool Ya Jets’ second dam, the
Castellanos, and he is out of Jet Black Chiraq, a winning daughter of Jet Black Patriot. She has produced two winners from four starters. Konnan Cartel is her first stakes winner.
His second dam is Central Hi-Point Aged Mare Shawne Bay, who placed third in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity and Jaguar Rocket Stakes. She has produced two winners from four starters. Shawne Bay is a half-sister to Make It Anywhere, winner of the Indiana Bred
Dwayne Breaux. Moonin Rusty has won or placed in six of seven starts.
PK Pure Rogue (Heza Fast Rogue-Kinky Boots) finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Konnan Cartel, while banking $14,758
for his owner Jose H. Rodriguez, who purchased the gelding for $9,200 at the 2021 LQHBA Yearling Sale. Ubaldo Luna rode PK Pure Rogue for trainer Dustin Rhodes. PK Pure Rogue finished second in the Old South Derby, Mardi Gras Derby and LQHBA Sale Juvenile.

six of 12 races and has banked $246,520, and his four wins in eight outs at Delta Downs include a 3/4-length victory in the Vinton Stakes on May 27.

Bit) pocketed the $25,089 runner-up share of the purse for his owner, Gene Cox. Juan F. Garcia Jr. rode the homebred gelding for trainer
Devon Lane TB mare Icy Lane, won the 2004 La Senora Handicap for New Mexico- bred 3-year-old fillies.
Cool Ya Jets was winning for the fifth time in 10 outs, and the $72,531 winner’s share of the purse from her first lifetime stakes victory bumped her earnings to $223,667. The filly ran second in last year’s 350-yard $520,166 LQHBA Sale Futurity- RG1 at Delta Downs, and she ended her
2-year-old season with
a second-place finish in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes-RG2 at Evangeline Downs on December 17.
San Lorenzo Moon (Apollitical Blood- Dashnunder Afullmoon) banked $24,661 for her owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. David Alvarez rode the homebred brown filly for trainer Jesus M. Marquez.
San Lorenzo Moon won last year’s LQHBA Sale Futurity-G1 and Louisiana Juvenile and was a leading by earnings in 2022.
Chartreuse Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue- Black Rosalita) ran third for her owner, Rogelio Huitron. Leonardo Rodriguez rode the brown filly for trainer Joel Huitron. Chartreuse Blue has won or placed seven races from nine starts.
