NOTHIN LIKE YOU
Nby John Moorehouse
othin Like You continued his winning ways
at Prairie Meadows, capturing the $37,835 Keokuk Stakes-G3 on July 1 at the Iowa track.
Nothin Like You won the AQHA Derby Challenge Championship-G3 last fall at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
Nothin Like You was an overwhelming post-time favorite, and the gelding did not disappoint. Nothin Like You was running fifth in the stretch, then surged past his rivals and drew clear, hitting the wire first by 1/2-length. John Hammes trains Nothin Like You, who finished in :17.179 for a 108 speed index. Stormy Smith was aboard. This latest $17,500 payday pushed the gelding’s bankroll to $379,042.
Bradbury Racing’s four-year-old gelding has been incredibly consistent, posting a 9-4-4 record in 18 starts. Of those nine wins, seven have come at Prairie Meadows. This marked his fifth victory in stakes company, including last year’s versions of the Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge and Prairie Meadows Gold Derby and the 2021 running of the Valley Junction Futurity-G3.
Thomas Bradbury and Lisa Beauprez bred Nothin Like You out of Whos Kissin Carter, a 2012 mare and former stakes winner herself who triumphed in the 2014 running of the Rocky Mountain Futurity at Arapahoe Park.
Lil Pete El Soruyo (Lil Kool Wagon- Pistolpaknprincess) was 2nd for Humberto Rivera. The Stacy Belt trainee had Alfredo Triana Jr. in the irons. Apollitical Payoff (Apollitical Jess-Seis The Royal Cash) finished 3rd. The gelding is owned by Brenda Reiswig, trained by Jason Olmstead, and had Armando Alvidrez aboard. The remaining order of finish was Tommie Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Runaway Renata), Valiant Miss Priss (Valiant Hero-Corona Mit Go), Purty Darn Quick (Jess Louisiana Blue-Now Margaret), Apollitical Redflash (Apollitical Jess-Chalala), Deutsch (One Fabulous Eagle-Hollie Jollie), and One Fabulous Boy (One Fabulous Eagle-Check Out Kaelie).
Prairie Meadows Gold Derby
CURLS PATTI WAGON
Cby Michael Compton
urls Patti Wagon broke sharply, took command
early, and kept on going to score a game win in the 350-yard Prairie Meadows Gold Derby on July 9 at Prairie Meadows.
With jockey Jorge Torres aboard for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill, Curls Patti Wagon flashed high speed away from the starting gate. He opened 1/2-length on the field in the lane and then dug in determinedly in the late stages to hold prohibitive favorite Fox News at bay by a head to emerge victorious. In notching
the initial stakes win of his career, Curls Patti Wagon stopped the timer in a fast :17.262, good for a speed index of 106. The final time encroached on the 2006 track record of :17.130 set by None As Easy.
An Oklahoma homebred for Stacy Martin, Curls Patti Wagon, the second-fastest qualifier for the main event, is now a winner in four of his nine lifetime starts, and the $46,316 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $92,529. Curls Patti Wagon is out of the Spit Curl Jess mare Eye A Spit Curl Girl.
Runner-up Fox News (FDD Dynasty-Summer Love Song), a six-time winner piloted by Edwin Escobedo, just missed for owner Tom Maher and trainer Jason Olmstead. Jim Streelman and Bill Dale bred the filly in Missouri and sold her for $42,000 at the 2021 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
Stakes-winning Gigi Tianna (Jess Louisiana Blue-Gianna Grace), also trained by Charette-Hill, closed strongly under jockey Jonathan Dominguez to finish third, a length behind Fox News, for owners- breeders M.C. and Cendy Stucks.
Relentless Okie (Hes Relentless-Ms Dynasty), Water Or Corona (KVN Corona-Aquafina), B Zoomin (Stevie B First Cash-Miss Zoomin Lady), AP Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Apollitical Scout),
and Free From Corona (Mr Jess Perry-Aquafina) completed the order of finish. A Legacy of Tales and Miss Ivory Jane were scratched.
Hawkeye Futurity
FIVE BAR PHI
Mby John Moorehouse
ake it three starts and three wins for Five Bar
Phi. The two-year-old gelding added a stakes victory to his thus-undefeated record, taking first place in the $87,905 Hawkeye Futurity on July 8 at Prairie Meadows.
Starting from the outside in the 10-horse field, Five Bar Phi had a sluggish start and was running seventh at the first call, then found another gear. The gelding was fifth going into the stretch, then made a driving finish
to reach the wire first by a neck at the front of a blanket finish. Ed Hardy trains Five Bar Phi, who had Angel Ramirez in the irons. The win produced a $39,557 payday that boosted the gelding’s total bankroll to $59,643.
After making his debut out at Remington Park in May, Five Bar Phi came back to the state where he was foaled and won his futurity trial, posting the fastest qualifying time of :16.700 in the process. That also made Five Bar Phi the post-time favorite at even-money odds.
Christine Hovey owns Five Bar Phi, who was bred by Cory Kilgore out of Number One Chorreada, a lightly-raced 2008 mare.
Cowboy 123 (Flying Cowboy 123-Corona Carmelita) finished strong to secure runner-up honors for Stephen Woyle. The Alex Wessels trainee had Berkley Packer aboard. Summerhills Cowgirl (Flying Cowboy 123-Teller To Fly), a 32-1 longshot, surprised in third place. The filly is owned by Thomas Scheckel, trained by Manuel Campos, and had Alfredo Triana Jr. in the irons.
Fabulous Fast Prize (One Fabulous Eagle-Fast Prize Tacita) and Perrys Special K (Mr Jess Perry-Boogie Special) dead-heated for fourth. Chloes Rockette (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More), Island Cowgurl 321 (Flying Cowboy 123-Island Gurl), American Sparrow (Fast N Famous Jeans-Wagonbelle), Apollitical June Bug (Apollitical Jess-Sandy June Bug), and Summerhill Express (Freighttrain B-One Fanous Hawkeye) completed the remaining order of finish.
