Masterpiece P&A Derby

aking it to the winner’s circle for the first time in
2023, Salt Wire APHA prevailed in the $19,891 Masterpiece Derby, held July 22 at Fair Meadows.
It marked the stakes victory for Salt Wire,
a sophomore gelding who now has visited the winner’s circle four times in 13 starts. The $12,270 first-place share of the purse from this event improved his lifetime earnings to $59,381.
Three-time AQHA Champion jockey James Flores rode Salt Wire to victory in this one. The gelding made a strong break from the No. 3 gate and wasted little time grabbing the lead. Ahead by one length at the first call, Salt Wire stayed in front by daylight the rest of the way. He won by 1 1/2-lengths, finishing the 350-yard out in :17.797 for a 95 speed index.
Russell Trull owns Salt Wire, who is trained by Kasey Willis. Though this marked the gelding’s first stakes victory, he’s no stranger to stakes competition, finishing third in this year’s Speedhorse Graham P&A Stakes-G1 and PSBA American Paint Classic-G1, both events held at Remington Park.
Kenneth Ruthardt bred Salt Wire out of winner Fantastic Follies, a 2011 Quarter Horse mare, who has produced nine winners.
RP Barracuda Dash APHA (Barracuda-RP Miranda Dash), a former stakes winner, finished second by a neck for Cornell Burkhalter. The Theodore Alexander trainee had Javier Hernandez- Gallardo up. Mimosa Lady APHA (Wagon Tales QH-Elaina Go Go) placed third for owners Dan and Kaye Jones. Matt Whitekiller is the trainer and Gonzalo Gutierrez had the riding assignment.
Zbars Livewire FS APHA (CRM Livewire-Zbar Miss Bully QH) rounded out the field.
Livewires Turnpike, The Big Chief, and WI You Aint No Cowboy all scratched.

orona Relentless repeated as winner of the Rocky
Henzig Stakes, prevailing in this year’s $15,849 version of the event, held July 22 at Fair Meadows. Roman Cruz was aboard as Corona Relentless broke well from the No. 4 gate and hustled to the
front of the field, leading by a 1/2-length at the first call. Her lead narrowed to a head as she reached the stretch, but Corona Relentless held her position and got to the finish line first by a neck.
Lucio Espiritu trains Corona Relentless, who finished the 350-yard trip in :17.630, for a 100 speed index.
A five-year-old mare owned by Roberto Zuniga-Rios, Corona Relentless notched her seventh career victory in 25 starts. The two Rocky Henzig races represent her two stakes wins to date, and the $8,784 prize from this one increased her total earnings to $89,382.
Eddie Cramer. Tom Maher, and Bill Maher
bred the mare, who was foaled in Louisiana out of Coronas Concierge, a 2012 mare and former stakes winner herself who captured the 2014 running of the North Central QHRA Futurity at Canterbury Park.
Sweet Brown Sugar (Dashair-Jumpn Form) secured runner-up honors for owner Rod Hansen and trainer Luz Chavira. Cordarelton Benn had
the riding assignment. SJM Desirable Candy (Jess Good Candy-Hi Ho Desirio) and Burning Follies (Dash To Follies-Burn the Kash) finished in a dead heat for third. Chavira trains SJM Desirable Candy, who is owned by Sammy Manek and had Gonzalo Gutierrez up. Burning Follies, the post-time favorite, is owned by Double A Ranch, Inc., trained by Jorge Gonzalez, and had Rolando Raudales in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Nobby Walsh (Jess Good Candy-Shanachee), Kool Tambien (Jess Tambien-First Kool Chick), Blues Candy SA (Jess Louisiana Blue-Rock Candy SA), Im A Fancee Chik (Im a Fancy PYC-Dixie Marrone TB), and Lota Winnin Wave BC (Lota PYC-Winnin Wave).

FLY ON SISTER

ly On Sister soared into black type on July 22 at
Fair Meadows, winning the $15,725 Cherokee Nation Stakes by a head.
There was no stopping Fly On Sister in this one. She led from gate to wire. The filly broke on top from the inside starting position, taking a 1/2-length lead by the first call. She maintained that separation going into the stretch and held on to win by a head.
Waylan Melton trains Fly On Sister, who completed the 350-yard trip in :17.814 to tally a 94 speed index. Agustin Silva had the riding assignment as Fly On Sister secured a $8,892 payday that improved her total earnings to $31,160.
A two-year-old sorrel filly owned by Josefina Guzman, Fly On Sister now holds two wins in four career starts. She also competed in the Oklahoma Futurity-G3 and entered this stakes after an unsuccessful bid to make the field for the Speedhorse Futurity, which was held as part of the same card at Fair Meadows and won by Separate Butallright.
Mark and Fay Annette McCloy bred Fly On Sister. She was foaled in New Mexico out of Bringitonsister,
a lightly-raced 2014 mare who is a full-sister to former Rainbow Futurity-G1 winner Carters Cookie.
Grand Going Templar (FDD Going Grand- Humor The Queen) nosed out Im Passing B for second place. Oleta Mabray owns Grand Going Templar, a Samuel Valdivia trainee who had Jhaciel Soto aboard. The post-time favorite at almost even-money odds, Im Passing B (Freighttrain B-Splendifferous) is owned by Family Racing LLC and Cimarron Nursery2, Inc. Jorge Gonzalez trains the colt, who was ridden by Salvador Martinez.
The remaining order of finish was Sausalito 100 (Apollitical Spirit-Sheachewchew), Docs Bennington (Separatist-Eye Spy Valletta), Revvs Cowboy (Flying Cowboy 123-Revv It Up), and Shaundas Hero (Valiant Hero-First Prize Shaunda).
