ELIA ISENIA
“ When I was just three months old, my mother was already singing tumba
to me. It was an old song without words, so she would just hum the rhythm.
As a young girl, I always danced when I heard Tumba, and kids still do the
same today. Then as a teenager, I would listen to a friend of my father in
Banda Bou. He could tap out a rhythm on a matchbox if there was nothing
else. I loved it so much that I started singing myself when I got older. And,
in 1991, I was named the first Reina di Tumba (Queen of Tumba). Reina di
Tumba is an important title here. You sing in schools and retirement homes,
on radio and television, everywhere. It’s the Carnival song of the year!
