Overview

The Urban Design Element is a comprehensive approach aimed at
enriching the aesthetic appeal and visual characteristics of the
District. It delves into the intricate dynamics among different
elements like buildings, streets, and open areas, elucidating how
they collectively define the essence of Washington, DC and its
various neighborhoods. This element meticulously examines how
the arrangement and structure of these elements can either
facilitate seamless connections or erect barriers within the
urban landscape. Moreover, it underscores the pivotal role of
urban design in instilling a sense of security or unease among
both residents and visitors. Ultimately, urban design emerges as
a potent force in shaping the overall perceptions of the District,
influencing the manner in which individuals interact with and
perceive their environment on a day-to-day basis.

                               Goals

Affirming Civic Identity: By placing emphasis on the historical
intention behind the design of the District, we aim to reinforce
and celebrate the civic identity ingrained within its architectural
and urban fabric. This entails honoring the cultural heritage and
values embedded in the District's design, fostering a sense of
belonging and pride among residents and visitors alike.

Strengthening Neighborhood Quality of Life: Our approach
prioritizes enhancing the overall well-being and livability of
neighborhoods within the District, even amidst periods of growth
and change. This involves a holistic strategy that not only
accommodates demographic shifts and urban development but
also preserves and enhances essential community assets such as
green spaces, recreational facilities, and cultural amenities. By
fostering a sense of community and social cohesion, we seek to
create environments where residents can thrive and flourish.

Providing Compatible Infill Development: We recognize the
importance of sustainable and context-sensitive infill
development as a means to fill vacant or underutilized spaces
within the District. Our aim is to ensure that new developments
harmonize with the existing built environment, respecting the
scale, character, and architectural heritage of surrounding
structures. Through thoughtful planning and design, we strive
to create seamless transitions between different land uses and
densities, preserving the integrity and functionality of
neighborhoods while accommodating diverse needs and
preferences.
