Physiologic bowel herniation begins at 8 weeks, which marks the developmental stage when the midgut migrates into the base of the umbilical cord.
¡ This is phenomenon is developmentally normal.
The sonographer should determine the gestational age based on crown rump length and understand that physiologic herniation is normal during this early stage of maturity.
Conversely, if physiologic bowel herniation does not resolved by 12 weeks, a follow-up examination is often warranted.
