ž Physiologic bowel herniation begins at 8 weeks, which marks the developmental stage when the midgut migrates into the base of the umbilical cord.
¡ This is phenomenon is developmentally normal.
ž The sonographer should determine the gestational age based on crown rump length and understand that physiologic herniation is normal during this early stage of maturity.
ž Conversely, if physiologic bowel herniation does not resolved by 12 weeks, a follow-up examination is often warranted.
