PATHOLOGY OF THE SPLEEN SPLENIC TRAUMA
• The spleen is often injured in cases of blunt trauma.
• Patients complain of LUQ pain and will have a
decreased hematocrit.
• Fresh bleeds can be difficult to visualize with sonography,
as they may appear isoechoic to the splenic tissue
• They can be located supcapsular to or within the splenic parenchyma.
• As the hematoma undergoes hemolysis, the sonographic appearance may range from anechoic to echogenic.
• Often a laceration can be seen as an echogenic line within the spleen immediately following trauma.
