MENTORING PROJECT

The YMCA Caroline Mentoring Project is a
free group mentoring program for school-aged
residents of Caroline County. Karen Jensen of
Denton, MD has been a mentor for 15 years.

During her time as a mentor, she has had the opportunity to
develop amazing relationships with youth that have been in
the program. Karen was a part of the program when it was a
one-on-one mentoring program and was skeptical of how the
new group model would work. Karen had already developed
a great relationship with her mentees, Angelique and Michele.
However, Karen was pleasantly surprised at how the group
model has allowed for more youth to be a part of the program.
Karen expressed that she was happy to be able to still spend time with
Angelique and Michele while also getting to connect with other kids.
When asked what she likes most about the new group model, Karen stated “I”m very excited about
the fact that more kids have been touched by this program and that it has been able to impact more
families in a positive way.” When asked what advice she would give someone looking to be a mentor
she stated, “For whatever reason a child needs a mentor, you are a positive voice for that family.
Allow the relationship to happen organically and allow the child and family to guide you.” Karen
expressed that she is looking forward to continuing to be a mentor and encourages others to be
involved in the YMCA mentoring program.

The program provides youth with an opportunity to develop structured, trusting
relationships with caring adults and peers who offer guidance, support, and
encouragement. The program is designed to develop competence and
character in the youth we serve.
