Irene May Ashen Celebrates 100th Birthday

Irene May Ashen of Lister Estates in Ridgely, celebrated her
100th birthday with 80 family members and old friends at
Tuckahoe State Park on June 12. Mrs. Ashen was surrounded
by three children, three grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren
and the newest 5th generation, great-great grandchild.
With several friends of more than 30 years who had traveled
from Prince Georges County, numerous church friends from
Christ Church, Denton, and special entertainment by “Kindred
Spirits”, Irene was feted as “the Queen of Birthdays”. As a
member of the “Greatest Generation”, her life story was retold
from the time when she first emigrated to the United States

from Great Britain on the Queen Mary as a G. I. War Bride
with two children on April 5th, 1946.
At her celebration, she was presented with birthday greetings
from the White House signed by President Joe Biden, a
Governor’s Citation from Governor Larry Hogan, a personal
congratulatory letter from Presiding Bishop and Primate of the
Episcopal Church in the U.S., Michael B. Curry, and a special
bouquet of red roses from the Bishop of the Diocese of Easton,
            Santosh Marray.
In addition, having been born in Blackwood, Wales, she was to
receive birthday greetings from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
of the United Kingdom which were en route, but delayed in the
mail. Also, her great grandson had arranged for the American

flag to be flown over the U.S. Capitol on June 14th, her actual

birthday, to be sent to her later as a memento of her special
            birthday milestone.
Irene had a joyous celebration among all those whom she loved
and attributed her longevity to faith in God, the love of family
and friends, and just to carrying on.
