Preschool settings are rich in opportunities that promote socioemotional
development among preschoolers. The closure of preschools due to the pandemic
has caused preschoolers to miss out on innumerable cherished activities with their
teachers and friends. Besides, the shift from face-to-face learning to home-based
learning (HBL) substantially impacts preschoolers’ socioemotional readiness, which
takes a toll on their mental health. Decades of research have revealed that parental
involvement in a child’s education is an important factor in determining his or her
future success, but less is studied about the influence of parents on preschoolers
below the age of seven. Hence, a quantitative study was conducted to determine
the relationship between parental involvement in HBL and socioemotional
readiness among preschoolers in the era of the pandemic. A total of 135
respondents, selected using a purposive sampling method, had answered the
online questionnaire. The respondents consist of parents with children aged six
years old who have been enrolled in government preschools, government agencies
preschools or private preschools, primarily in Klang Valley. The findings showed
that the level of parental involvement and socioemotional readiness were
moderately high. In addition, correlation analysis revealed a significant positive
relationship between parental involvement in HBL and preschoolers’
socioemotional readiness. The implication of this study shows that a higher level of
parental involvement can enhance preschoolers’ socioemotional readiness. As a
result, parents do indeed require better guidance to engage in HBL that improves
their children’s development.
