He began his career
by obtaining a BA in 1960 from George Washington University, and stayed on
to earn his MA in 1961,
and Doctor of Philosophy
in 1969. During his studies he took up such jobs as being a researcher at the Institute of Defense Analysis in 1962, and carpentry with Earl C. Mead & Son (1951- 1960) While completing his doctorate he also worked
at George Washington University as an instructor and teaching fellow (1961- 1965), and at Moravian College from 1965 as an associate and assistant professor. After finishing his PhD, the newly minted Dr. Mead continued teaching at MoravianCollege until 1973.
From 1973-1975,
Dr. Mead worked as the
first associate of Applied Communications, Inc., before moving on to work
as the Associate Executive Director for the Domestic Council Committee on
Right of Privacy (1975- 1976). He also worked
in Washington D.C. for
three years as a public administration fellow with the Academy for Contemporary Problems (1976-1979), and as a consultant for Mead Associates from 1979-1995.
Dr. Mead returned to teaching in 1979 with a post as both an associate professor of political science, and a coordinator of the MPA program at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. In 1984 he was made a full professor. In 1995 he stepped down from coordinating the MPA program, but continued teaching until his retirement in 2001.
Dr. Mead has served
in numerous endeavors alongside his primary teaching career. At U.
North Carolina he has been president of faculty (1986- 1987), and chair of the faculty executive committee of the Faculty Council (1986- 1989). Since 1969 he has been an adjunct professor
at a variety of colleges
and universities. Outside
of university work, he has served as a consultant for Social Research Associates (1970-1973), and at one point was vice president
of the Stratton Woods Homeowners Association and member of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s Public Housing Authority.
Though retired, Dr. Mead continues to be civically involved in multiple organizations. He is a member of the American Political Science Association, the American Society for Public Administration,
and the Urban Affairs Association. As a writer,
he has authored multiple articles with publications such as Politics and Policy, and the Journal of Urban Affairs. He is also currently involved with the Catawba- Wateree Basin Advisory Commission established
by both North Carolina and South Carolina legislators. Before this, he was vice chair and chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission, and Urban Design Task Force. Outside of political science, Dr. Mead is also a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association, and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. As of 2019, he is currently serving in the role of president for the OWAA.
