 Dr. Mead returned to teaching in 1979 with a post as both an associate professor of political science, and a coordinator of the MPA program
at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
In 1984 he was made a full professor. In 1995 he stepped down from coordinating the MPA program, but continued teaching until his retirement in 2001.
Dr. Mead has served in numerous endeavors alongside his primary teaching career. At U. North Carolina he has been president of faculty (1986-1987), and chair of the faculty executive committee of the Faculty Council (1986-1989). Since 1969 he has been an adjunct professor at a variety of colleges and universities. Outside of university work, he has served as a consultant for Social Research Associates (1970- 1973), and at one point was vice president of the Stratton Woods Homeowners Association and member of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s Public Housing Authority.
Though retired, Dr. Mead continues to
be civically involved in multiple organizations. He
is a member of the American Political Science Association, the American Society for Public Administration, and the Urban Affairs Association. As a writer, he has authored multiple articles
with publications such as Politics and Policy, and the Journal of Urban Affairs. He is also currently involved with the Catawba-Wateree Basin Advisory Commission established by both North Carolina and South Carolina legislators. Before this, he was vice chair and chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission, and Urban Design Task Force. Outside of political science, Dr. Mead is also a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association, and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. As of 2019, he is currently serving in the role of president for the OWAA.
