Middletown: The Winchester House, 219 South Main Street
Left: The Great Miami River cut a broad swath through Middletown surrounding the Winchester House at 219 South Main Street. J. K. Thomas, founder of Warlow-Thomas Paper Company and a founder of Wooster College in Ohio, built
the house in 1878 on a triangular lot just south of downtown known as the “Smoothing Iron.”
Upper Right: The well-maintained Winchester House has been converted to a primary residence and several apartments. Numerous impressive historic homes were part of Millionaires’ Row during the prosperous years before and after the 1913  ood.
Lower Right: Houses from left to right along Millionaires’ Row on South Main Street: The Calvin Verity house was built by Samuel McClellan in 1885. In 1917, Calvin Verity, son of Armco founder George M. Verity, bought the house. Calvin Verity also was the father to C. William Verity, who later became CEO of Armco and served as secretary of commerce under President Ronald Reagan. The Theodore Marston home was built in the 1870s in the High Victorian Italianate style. The A.T. Wilson house was built in the 1870s and has been substantially altered. Wilson owned a funeral business, and the house continues to serve that function today. The Romanesque-style Sorg mansion was built by Paul J. Sorg in 1887. Sorg was an industrialist who served twice in the U.S. Congress.
