Dayton: Newcom Tavern form endures ood
and festival
Right: Newcom Tavern, one of the rst Dayton buildings, withstood 11 feet of oodwater that crested overnight March 25-26. Built in 1796 by Colonel George Newcom, the cabin sat on the southwest corner of Main Street and what is now Monument Avenue. In 1896, the cabin was moved about one-half block east to Van Cleve Park (now RiverScape), directly across from today’s Miami Conservancy District headquarters. In 1964, the cabin was relocated to Carillon Historical Park, where visitors can learn about Dayton’s early years.
Far Right: RiverScape MetroPark features two buildings reminiscent of Newcom Tavern’s form.
The park lies at the edge of the river downtown
and has become a hub for concerts and community events. Beautiful oral plantings, hanging baskets and fountains in the summer, an ice skating pavilion in the winter, and a year-round bike hub make RiverScape a prime downtown location.
