Dayton: Riverfront property was vulnerable – now valuable
Above: Steele High School, which opened in 1894, suffered signi cant structural damage on its corner tower during the Great Flood of 1913. Many of Dayton’s most prominent citizens, including the Wright Brothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar, attended Steele in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Steele originally was built to replace the old Central High School and was Dayton’s only high school until 1906. Although severely damaged by the 1913 ood, the school survived until 1940. The building was razed in 1955 to make way for Dayton’s rst modern parking garage that was later demolished in the early 2000s to make way for the CareSource headquarters.
