issues that can address constraints to economic transformation.
Peace, the foundation of economic transformation
As mentioned at the start of the chapter, peace has a pivotal role to play in
development and so, like economic growth and good governance, peace is a necessary, yet
not sufficient condition for economic transformation. A peaceful nation is a nation in
which social cohesion can be enhanced relatively easier and importantly peace assists in
overcoming other development challenges which need attention in The Gambia such as
gender inequality (See Video 2 for an example of the UN in The Gambia’s approach to
peace and how it facilitates development especially among women and youth.
