Good governance, the pillars of economic transformation
6
Besides peace, economic transformation is impossible without good governance.
This is even more relevant in transition countries such as The Gambia. The concept of
governance within the 2030 Agenda is all encompassing. Within the African continent,
the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), a flagship programme of the Africa Agenda
2063, on strengthening good governance and good governance peer learning has 4
governance pillars; (a) democracy and political governance, (b) economic governance and
management, corporate governance and socio-economic governance. The CCA
governance background paper as well as the economic transformation appendix booklet
unpack Gambia’s governance experience.
Additionally, the current UNDAF which runs until 2021 identifies the centrality
of governance for economic transformation in The Gambia. While priorities and specifics
of relevant interventions may have changed, most - if not all - the governance reasoning
and issues remain relevant. What may be worth exploring as the UN is whether the UN
reforms call for any adjustments and/re-alignment in how the UN works.
The current UNDAF seeks to support two broad governance outcomes aimed at;
“supporting government’s efforts to achieving sound macroeconomic management
and inclusive growth underpinned by solid public management and strengthening
government capacity to promote and enhance good governance, strict application of the rule
of law and due process for justice that conform to international standards and norms to
enhance inclusivity of development” (UN The Gambia, UNDAF 2017-2021)
