Private sector development with relevant social protection interventions to protect
and/or mitigate against the excesses of the markets
Private sector development is important for the creation of quality jobs. Jobs, in
turn, facilitate (through income) personal development whilst providing a social status
that is most likely to ensure that the populace is participates and is engaged in the
economy and society. When people are engaged in their societies, economies, and politics,
they are not only more productive; they also contribute to stability and development in
their communities and countries.

Private sector development however needs to be facilitated. Figure 13 above
presents the top ten business environment constraints facing the private sector in the
country. As can be seen from the Figure, The Gambia performs much better in all but
two indicators when compared to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. These are access to
